I'm in the same boat as fatboydan, damn thing reads full all of the tiime when running. As soon as I shut it off the gauge drops.........most HD owners I have talk to about this issue all say that the gauges are crap and to just use the trip meter to track your fuel consumption. This is working well for me, since I have an extended warranty, I might get it fixxed when I get around to it...............if not, the rule is......gas up at 180 miles on the trip.
Mine has been stuck since I bought the bike.
Figure your mileage and then go by the odometer.
Motorcycles aint supposed to have no stinkin gas gage.

My fuel gauge is spot on....very accurate....for a 4 gallon tank. When my gauge is firmly on E, I have 1 gallon left and my light comes on. According to my electronic odometer I have 42 miles remaining....and I've been consistently getting 44 mpg. So, I've learned how to use my particular fuel gauge. It's a ballpark for me and I use the odometer and remaining to track consumption. 44mpg = 220 per tank so at 190 I start looking.

when my lite comes on I am down to 1.5 gallons left.
My guess has been that the light comes on at 1/4 tank, not 1 gallon. \\; As for the fluctuating level, I've seen that the gauge takes a while to crank back up after filling the tank. \\; I wonder if the fluctuating level with a low tank has to do with the gas dropping below the level of the split in the tank. \\; As you ride maybe gas sloshes from one side to the other and can give strange levels?
I know that a trick that BMW GS owners have is if they run out of gas they can lay the bike on its side and they can get about a 1/2 gallon from one side of the tank to the other as an emergency reserve.
Double Gaffy's recommendation. I have the Kuryakyn gauge w/ battery charge indicator and it is surprisingly accurate. It is programmable, but I didn't have to adjust mine, as it was spot on from the beginning (when it flashes red, I better get fuel pronto!).

I just installed a H-D Flames LED gauge on my Deuce. \\; Seems to be very accurate. \\; Has 6 LED lights which go off one by one until the last one which will glow red with a little over a gallon left, &\\; starts flashing when tank is almost empty.
