Question Fuel gauge

I recently filled up the bike and went for a ride that I thought would use all the gas. At about 140 miles the low fuel light comes on and says I have 35 miles left in gas . I fill up when the gauge says 1 mile left. The bike took 3.4 gal. Now the way I figure it I had 1 gal left in the tank. How do I correct this problem, or will it give me a different reading each time this happens. Its the first time I ran the tank down to see what will happen.

The fuel gauge is worthless. Just go by mileage.

The fuel gauge is worthless. When my low fuel light comes on the bike consistently takes about 3.2 gal. to fill up. When the light comes on the gauge is always reading empty. I usually fill up around 170 miles

my light tends to come on when I still have 1/2 tank reading on the gauge and only about 75 miles of riding since fueling.....threw me the first time. I now just go by mileage like the guys said above.

HD fuel gauges are notoriously inaccurate, but Yours sounds about right. When you get to Zero miles to empty you should have about 1 gallon left. That is your "reserve" on a fuel injected bike that does not have a petcock controlled reserve like on a carbed bike.
