I gotta say I don't think I've ever met anyone who wears earplugs when they ride...can't think of why I'd need them?
 \\;
I was in the same boat until I started hanging with some guys who do some real distance riding. \\; I was skeptical at first, but man, they really are great for the highway. \\; Don't knock it til you try it. \\; Most savvy touring riders use them all the time.
As aforementioned, they recommend ear plugs even for crotch rocket riders going on long rides as the wind noise alone will cause damage to your ear. \\; 500+ miles with a loud exhaust on your Harley and you'll have ringing and that "just got out of a way too loud concert" feeling in the ears for a day or so. \\; I wear them sometimes... and when I don't and go on a 1k ride without them, I regret it.
You could also take hot wax and pour down into your ear, wait about five minutes, pull them out \\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\;and presto, molded ear plugs!!
 \\;\\\\\\;
Works well with lead too.
 \\;
Haven't you ever heard of lead poisoning?

I haven't heard squat with all this lead in my ears.
It's easy to pick out the forum users that haven't lost their hearing YET.
Ain't that the truth. \\; I use the E.A.R foam plugs. \\; Get them from work where the safety department encourages the employees to take them with were ever we may run into the need for hearing protection. \\; Most of your initial hearing loss will be in the mid ranges, where childrens voices(ain't gonna hear your little girl tell ya she loves ya) and the wimmens voices(sometimes that wouldnt be so bad). \\; Hearing is kind of like yer eyes, once it's gone they ain't comming back.
Of course, after I spent $65 on a pair at a rally last year. I should have known that W-M would have them at some point.[:@]
They are nice to have though. I can actually hear the radio on my SG better with the ear plugs in.

I've done loud things all my life (hot rods w/open headers, etc, etc,). \\; I now have "tennitus": A constant ringing in my ears. \\; No big deal? \\; Think again. I am a Certified Locomotive Engineer for a railroad. \\; There is a periodical mandatory hearing test in order to remain certified. \\; My hearing is now borderline. \\; So, my livelihood is at stake. \\; Who'd a thought that when I was young and stupid with my head under the hood of a revving smallblock with open headers?
 \\;
I now wear hearing protection when doing my "loud" things, including \\;always wearing ear plugs when riding the Deuce. \\; I'm trying desperately to save what hearing I have left.
 \\;
Go ahead, keep on ignoring \\;the thought of protecting your hearing... it will go away eventually.
