Rider backrest for me, has done wonders for my long range riding,, I have a two level fusion L4-L5, L5-S1 with insturmentation. All my buds laughed at me when I first started using one,, now they all have one too!
I too have fusion at L4-L5 S1 as well as three disc in my neck. \\; \\; \\; If you're over weight, loose it. \\; Get a bit of exercise including stetching. \\; The backrest is a good idea also but you still need to deal wiwth the root of the problem.
 \\;
Oh ya, since I turned fifty (Im 52) , I always start a ride with 6 Advil. \\; Hey, it works.
Here's a "personal trainer's" 2 cents. \\; THE WEIGHT BELTS DO MORE DAMAGE THAN HELP. \\; Why you ask they take the place of your core to support you properly. \\; what you need to consider is strenghten the \\;CORE to eliminate lower back pain while riding. \\; I consider myself in good shape however I have not riden all that long and the new position being a bike has reminded me to re-think my focus on my exercise and how my bike is configured to my structure.
 \\;
Assuming the "C" shape position while on the road is not the best position to eliminate back pain. \\; what "C" shape am I talking about? \\; That's with the arms straight out, legs spread and the body looking like a cannon ball just hit your mid section hence your shaped like the letter "C". \\; I would recommend doing a search for CORE exercise if you plan on riding in comfort and focus on being upright on your bike. \\; remember what MOM was saying years ago "sit up straight" well re-play that voice and remind yourself it will help the lower back on those long ride.

I've been a gym rat since I was 13\\; closin on 40 now. \\; ex-bobybuilder, comp. powerlifter, personal trainer, etc. \\; what is stated above is correct\\; same is true for all compressive "aides".
core stretches and exercise are ur answer. \\; the majority of "back" support comes from ur abdominals - remember there are actually muscles under that gut!
