Three times now I have gotten on the '08 nighty and when I push the start button, nothing happens for the first several pushes \\;and then \\;it seems to struggle a little bit to start. \\; Yes it is in nuetral, clutch in and run switch on. \\; Before it actually starts, nothing at all happens, no whirr, no tick, no grind and \\;lights don't dim. \\; Just acts as if the switch or relay isn't working.
 \\;
It did this a couple days ago, then no problem for a couple days. \\; It started fine yesterday morning, then again at 5 pm. \\; Then it hesitated to start at 9:30pm and this morning at \\;7am it really took a few times to get it. \\; Just tried again and it started up no problem!?
 \\;
Could this be condensation/dew forming in the switch housing? \\; It seems that the only times it has happened were in the morning or early evening, times when dew would start/ has formed. \\; Or maybe could the nuetral sensor/ shift indicator or whatever won't let the bike start in gear is glitching? \\; Whattya think?
Try changing the battery in the key fob. Might be the security system isn't disengaging. Seriously, my battery died on my 07 after only two weeks and left me stranded. Always carry a spare now.
You might also be getting electric interference. Try moving the bike to another location and away from your cell phone etc.
The other possibility, happens with my '07, is that it fails to recognize the key fob. The key fob is part of your security system and if the bike thinks it's out of range, nothing will happen when you press the start button. \\;When mine does that, I take the key fob out of my pocket, or windshield bag, hold it for a second and put it back in either place. The bike will start right up.
had the same problem and i tried everything but one day i checked my wires on the starter and they were fine but the bolts were loose so i got to checking and the problem is when its loose you loose ground so sometimes it would start and sometimes it wouldnt and it would not screw up when i took it to the stealer but let me be somewere in the middle of no were and it wouldnt start. good luck with your problem.
might want to check the small wire on the solenoid this was a problem in 07' the connection is loose if you crimp the end a little tighter never happens again. worked for my 07'ultra
Had similar, was a brand new but bad battery. Something was loose inside the battery. Wiggle the positive terminal and it would start, or try to start it for a while and apparently something heated up and expanded in the battery and it would start.
