I'm looking to get a trailer for our two bikes (softtail and a dresser). Can anyone provide any pointers? - pros and cons of open versus closed, size needed (6x12?), aluminum vs. steel, etc. I've heard from one person that the pros of closed are the lack of obvious view of what's inside and protection from elements, but that open provide a lot less drag (better gas mileage) and are easier to maneuver around, plus cost less. Does the aluminum save much more gas or is the added price not worth it? We'd like to load the two up and ride to various places on occasion, unload them, drive around for a while, reload and move on to the next area on weekly excursions. Figure some of you here would have lots of experience in this area, either way. Thanks.
I think you've answered your own question. It really boils down MPG. Either way try not to put a cover on the bikes as the constant motion will have the softest cloth act like sandpaper.
If it's a single purpose trailer, enclosed would be nice. If you want to do dump runs and haul things that are too wide for it so you have to let something hang over the sides etc., then open is nice too. I opted for open since it will get more general purpose use than bike hauling use. $.02.
