The bulbs are Harleys own number and not H-3 for sure. HD way of making you buy everything from them is my guess. Makes no difference what # they are as you can only buy them from HD. I bought one bulb for my research on passing lamps & HID/modulators, this is how I know.
I go to O'reily Auto parts and get my passing light bulbs about 7 dollars each, the one I matched it to is a 881 EIKO brand, just take the bulb out and take it with you to match it.Just make sure you match the wattage on the bulb because they do have different size wattage. You can also get the blue bulbs or the halogen, whatever you want to pay for, same goes for the headlight bulb.It is just like the front and rear wheel bearings on a Harley they are not special bearings, they don't build a special bearing for the hub ,they build the hub to fit a certain bearing, there are alot of things on a Harley that you can buy elsewhere. You don't have to go to the dealership and pay a 300 percent mark-up, too bad all the parts aren't like that!
I've swapped out the stock sealed beams for a set of the HD Halogen passing lamps, I think they were part # 68208-98A. Although they are described as a sealed beam, they are not. A little trimming on the rubber boot reveals a standard 35w. H-3 bulb that can be replaced if it blows. I took the stock ones out and replaced them already, but keep the stock bulbs as spares, just in case.
Once you buy the lens, which admittedly are a bit pricey, the bulbs are dirt cheap and available everywhere. No mystery bulbs to contend with.
You can use either the 895 or the 893 Halogen in a blister pack. Be careful of the wattage. I think stock is 27.5w or 35w. I got 2 55w Zenon on ebay a while back and they are a lot brighter but they get hot. I only use them at night and so far they have not melted anything......yet.
Adjust them, My lights when new lit up about 20ft of road,, went back couple days later and had them to fix it.. If U try to move them Ur self just beware that once they come loose U'll need the special socket with a slot in the side to retighten them...Wires are in the middle of the nut and bolt..
Harley changed the bulbs on the passing lamps in either 05 or 06. Mine is an 06 and I have since found that these lights use 27W 881 bulbs. I have found them on ebay's Luminics store for $21 with free shipping. This is for the Luminics ultra white 881 bulb that will fit 06 and up passing lights.
