I believe that the fitment suggestion offered by the company that made my aftermarket windshield suggested that you look over the shield and see the road surface 50 feet in front of you. This puts most people a couple of inches above the shield. I prefer to have mine about one inch higher than that so that I can ride in a slight slouch and look through it or ride with good posture and look over it. I find that when riding in heavy downpours, I tend to sit straight up anyway.

H-D's position has been that windshield should be below your line of sight. i can't stand the image jump you can get looking thru a windshield and momentarily looking around or over it. Rain-X is bad for plexiglas (an acrylic). H-D shields are Lexan ( a polycarbonate).

I was using my shorty windshield ( the one that I can see over about as high as the top of my nose )a couple of weeks ago and had a wasp sting me between the eyes while I was doing 60 mph. Filled my sun glasses with tears. How that sucker got between my sun glasses and helmet is still amazing. Could have only been about a 32nd of an inch seperating them. Got home and put the tall windshield back on.

The main purpose of the shield is to deflect most of the wind force off your chest/throat and preferably your cheeks. It should never be used as a substitute for proper eye protection. The higher it (especially a "barndoor") is, the more the wind catches it and does some of your steering for you.

As mduggan said in his post...you should be able to see the road surface 50' in front of the bike just looking over the windshield.
