Question Tightened trans plug too much

Disclaimer: I tried the search, but didn't find what I was looking for.

I overtightened the trans plug and now it won't tighten down like it should and has a slow drip. I wrapped some teflon tape around the plug and only worked for a while. I used the white tape. Should I use the yellow stuff that's used on gas line connections? Is it possible that I cracked the pan when I over tightened it? How much does the new pan cost? I'm glad that it only hold 24 ounces!

Thanks for the help!

Ouch!... that's why I always use a torque wrench. Try liquid teflon pipe joint compound made by Permatex... or this http://www.permatex.com/products/mot...ead_repair.htm if that don't work... let us know.

I would try to put a new drain plug in first. Just might be damage to the threads on the plug and not the pan.

even with the spec torque, after repeated removal and installs, it can still strip out.. soft aluminum threads.. my best fix is to install a 1/2x20 helicoil thread insert with red locktite, and liquid teflon to cement the plug into place between oil changes...

a helicoil was my next step... but he said that teflon tape worked for a while so I figured it can't be that bad.

If you felt the metal yield then you probably stripped the pan threads. Helicoil will probably be your next step. When working with threaded aluminum parts using a torque wrench is always a good idea. I buy the HD O ring kit and change all O rings when I do oil changes. I use teflon tape on the plug threads
