Default question about air filter cover - help!

I hope you guys can help me. I posted a similar question in another thread, but am not getting too much response, so I figured I'd start my own...So here goes:

I'm starting to get tired of the stock air cleaner cover on my 06DWG. I had the stage 1 kit with the high flow filter installed when I bought the bike, and am now looking to make a change. Keep in mind that this is strictly for looks (totally not interested in any performance gains at this point). A few weeks back, I was at the dealer and there was a super glide custom that was all hopped up (that's the technical term I think ) Anyway..the way they had the air filter cover setup was that they just took off the stock cover (football) and bolted one of the "harley collection" air cleaner inserts on by itself, with the air filter exposed around the sides.
So my first question is, is there any problem with doing this as far as if it rains, or dirt, ect.???
Now the bigger problem...as I mentioned..I have the high flow filter installed...but what I didn't realize was that when I took off the stock cover, I saw that the high flow filter is blue. That wouldn't be a problem if I had a different color bike...but with my particular color, it just totally doesn't fit. So now the question is...is there another filter I can buy that is black (or even chrome) instead of blue..does harley make one, and if not, does the aftermarket make something that will just bolt right on the same way? I've attached some pics of what I'm looking to do.

I'd really appreciate any help here...and if anyone has a similar setup (as I've seen a few on this board who have done something similar with aftermarket cover/inserts), I'd really appreciate some pics.

Thanks everyone!

Todd

buy a K&N...they'll be red or variation of...comes in a variety of shapes and depths...the color of the filter will pick up the color on your tank

it wont hurt anything runnin it open element like that...might have to clean it more...it aint gonna like rain very much, but neither do i....what youre describing is a tryed & true way to hop up your air intake, plus it looks good

keep in mind too todd, that with the k & n's, they get oiled, so if you get the actual K & N oil, it is red as well, so will accent the red somemo, but, dont use too much, as it does drip with heat.
when i got my RK, the right side of the engine was all gooed up from the tard i bought it from oiling the snot outa it.

i been using K & N's forever, and light oil is just dandy. wipe away any excess

i spray very lightly, and let it soak in, then wipe, install

The new Harley filters are black I believe (at least the SE filter I got put on mine to replace the blue one was). That light blue doesn't really go with any color unfortunately, but most people didn't notice (I have the HD cover on mine, the smaller one that just covers the outside.)

I did have some problems with rain and such my bike with the blue a/f, but I found out there was a bad batch of them sent out, which I was lucky enough to receive! I had the exposed air filter on my 03 Lowrider though, and didn't have any problems with that one.

Thanks for the replies guys. I found from a different thread someone posted the part number for the K&N. I just ordered it online. Hopefully this is the right one:

K&N filter HD-0800

From what I can see it's black where it needs to be. But it does mention a gasket. Do you know if I will need to remove a gasket and replace it?
Thanks again guys!

Todd

Get the K&N then order a cover for the exposed element from www.outerwearsracing.com It rolls up into a 2x2 inch space and keeps out 90% of the h2o. I only use it in a down pore.

The K&N will look great with your new open cover. The gasket is the black ring on top of the filter in the picture you posted. It's peel and stick on one side only. Looks like you're on the right track. That cover looks really good too. I've had my K&N and cover since before I even picked the bike up but haven't been able to install it yet. Still stuck with the football for now.

I went to that site...not sure exactly what to search for. Do you have a part #?
Thanks.

Thanks bro for the info...Whatcha waiting for (i.e. installing the K&N and cover)...from what I see it's just the outer bolt and three holding the filter in place...am i correct? Can't wait to see your upgrade man!

Or you could cover that ugly filter with a cover like this!
