Hi i have a 2008 road king, I have only done 450 miles on it when it developed a problem it wont idle properly Its anything between 2000 and 3000rpm, I was 120 miles from home heading towards an annual rally for Harley Davidsons.
When i got there i went to the dealers stand that i bought it from and was told that there wasent anything they could do with it at the show and told me it would be ok to ride it home, so i did you dont notice it when you are riding along at 50-60 mph but when you stop at a junction the engine is revving like mad and you have to slip the clutch to pull away
I booked it in for this and told them to give it its 1000 mile service at the same time
When i went back to get it they assured me there wasnt anything wrong with it and they had reset every thing
I gingerly rode 3 miles to get fuel as they had used the quarter tank of fuel i had in it and the light was on, It seemed ok but when i rode it the other 10 miles or so home it wouldnt idle properly again
It has a fly by wire throttle which is electronicaly controlled has anyone else had any problems like this and if so how do i fix it as my dealer cant
It's likely a sensor (ie. IAC) but I couldn't pinpoint it... they have to fix it... take it to another dealer, I would trailer it if you can (legal reasons only). Does the engine light come on?
Don't dork around with it. It's not your job to fix it. Take it back to the dealer immediately and put the heat on the Service department to fix it right.
Either you have a throttle position sensor thats faulty or out of adjustment, or a vacuum leak at the intake manifold. Make them run a full diagnostic check on the computer and sensors, then a mechanical check for a vacuum leak. Actually, you shouldn't have to steer them in any direction, they should be knowledgable enough to find the problem on their own.
Dumb question but do you have the wireless throttle like the EGs? If so there is a reset process in the manual.
Hi yes it has the wireless throttle I read page 40 of my owners manual but it doesnt tell you how to reset the throttle
According to the manual there is 4 different modes that all limit the throttle if there is a problem so you can limp home 25mph.
But with mine i can still accelarate to normal speeds 70mph and more
Nobody i have spoken to has ever came accross this problem before, But i dont believe mine is the only one that this has ever happened to.
My dealer tried to say if i had used the cruise control and switched it off while riding the bike rather than braking to cancel it that it could damage the ecm but if that was true then surley there would be a warning in the hand book telling you not to do this or even a fail safe so you couldnt switch if of without pressing the brake.
Any time i have used the cruise control i have always pressed the brake to cancel and i havent used the cruise control since i got it back form its 1000 mile service

Like Lil Budy Wizer said, if you rev the engine before you kill it, the ecm "remembers" that setting causing the high idle. Could be the problem...there have been several posts from people with this same issue. You can turn the ignition switch on and off four times(I believe that's the trick) to reset to factory settings.
