I road in Texas for 30 years and never wore a helmet. Then I moved to Tennessee and we are required to wear one here. My wife and I both had novelty helmets and liked the way they felt, light and not much wind resistance.
Last Father's Day my wife wrecked her bike and when she did she hit her head on the pavement and cracked the helmet. It left a pretty good cut on her forehead but it did save her from serious head injury. (It didn't help with the road rash or 7 broken ribs though.)
Since hers was cracked and she needed a new helmet anyway we both got ACC helmets that are DOT certified. They are almost as light as the novelty helmets we had but are built much better.
Now, do helmets save lives? I don't know but I feel safer riding now with my DOT helmet and so does she.
While on a road trip this summer, was wearing a POS carbon fiber knock-off helmet. Wasn't wearing my usual helmet that has padding between the liner and shell because it had fiberglass in it and I did not want to be irritated by it (wah...wah). When I wrecked at 35mph. Wound up being air lifted to the head trauma ICU. Yesterday I received a Z1R, 3/4 helmet in the mail; just in time for my ride home from the collision repair center on Friday!!!
