I opened my big mouth again and inserted foot. We want to do a benefit run in January, and as we all know most of the time its too cold to do a run. So, I mentioned a run-less poker run. Everyone thought that was a good idea, so, you guessed it, I have to arrange it. The question for everyone; What would spark your attention, to get you into the hall and participate in this benefit? What kind of games can you think of to attract some attention? The final question is, would you attend if it was in your area?
How about an in-house keno night? Don't have to be a card player to have some fun. Or a meat or turkey raffle? Some old western movies and a couple of door prizes.
? Get sponsors? Have a 'scavenger hunt' maybe in a downtown area where
food and drink may be plentiful. Print up a list of odd ball items
and the persons with the most items (And less) win a prize (hopefully donated
by a business you are friends with...?)?
Depending on who the 'benefit' is for......and if they are a member of a group/club (American Legion/VFW/Moose/Kiwana/etc)....get them involved.
From my knowledge.......you will need twice the number of people that you think you will need, and only get back less than half of what you think you will get.
I collected donations for a friends charity ride in NY State. I went door to door of
businesses and collects multiple hundreds of dollars of stuff for door prizes. He would Bar B que a hog, 50/50 raffle........sell poker hands.........hire a band........
and we would maybe 'clear' a 1200 bucks. Finally after the third year he said
'screw it'. Nobody helped him, and I was the only person that would bring donated items
and I had to drive/ride 1700 miles to bring them.
I would always win the "most distance travelled" trophy.....
But if you want to have a poker run with NO riding........maybe a scavenger hunt or something like a geo cache hunt.....where you might hide items (free drink chips.....coupons for dinners, whatever?) , and give the participants a list of clues where to find them?
Be sure to ask local bars/resterants for donations. You give away one free drink,
hopefully they sell two more. Same with a resterant, one cheap meal and sell another.
Be sure to announce to everyone the names of the businesses that donate. Be sure to
send thank you's to all donators.
I just started drinking so this is the best I can come up with right now.
