Hey guys, has anyone here ever hosted a local ride to benefit something? Here where I live, there are not many local rides, most are out of town, and always benefit a large orginization. My a few friends of mine are thinking about hosting a local ride in early november, and calling it "Reindeer Ride". The ride would raise money that would be used to purchase gifts directly for needy families who cannot provide anything for their kids. These families are pulled from a "tree" that the local chruches use to get their information out to the public.
Here are my ideas
Roughly a 40 mile loop around the city, escorted through town by police.
Pay in would be $20 solo, and $30 two-up.
Door prizes donated by local businesses.
Coffee/hot choclate provided by local business.
All money collected would be used to to evenly distribute for gifts.
I figured I would get the word out by making up flyers and putting them at the local harley dealer, other motorcycle dealers, auto parts stores, and some for people to put at their place of work. I thought pre-registration would be nice to get an idea of how many people are comming. If its successful, then I would most def. make it an annual event, hopefully growing each year.
I know there are lots of charities out there, but most, do not directly help the families. Most of the money goes to bigger orginizations like goodwill, goodfellows, and salvation army. I thought it would be nice to have something a little different and spread the christmas cheer.
So what do you think? Am I missing anything? Any input welcome.
Poker rides are great fund raisers, plus a little something more than just a ride around town. Check with local Law Eonforcement for the need for permits or such. Always good Idea to an non Charitable organzation involved, such as a church, that way people feel more comfertable with where the money is going. Great Idea, Good Luck, be sure to dot your i's and cross your t's.........
We have a ride here every year where you pay $10, bring an unwrapped new toy and 2 cans of food. The food goes to the food bank. The $10 is used for wrapping paper, bows, additional toys, etc. Having people bring a toy will cut down on the amount of shopping someone will need to do after the fact.
Ask your Polixce chief about Police support. Ask your local businesses about FREE anything.
My experience........posted elswhere: You will need twice the number of people to help you, and you will get back half of what you expect.
First thing you should do is post where you are! Who knows maybe someone here has one planned already. As was posted , there are quite a few toy runs each year and maybe someone could use more volunteers and you could help them out, no need to reinvent the wheel if ya know what I mean.
I have put together benefits rides and the poker runs seem to work the best. The bigger the prize, the better the turn out. Poker runs involve various stops at bars, shops, whatever and they are usually willing to kick in some swag. Contact the prez of the local ABATE as they are usually very helpful. Get plenty of help to put up fliers. Post event in local paper two weeks out. Good Luck!
