I'm going to be replacing my original battery in the next month; is there anything that I will need to do before or after installing it? Will simply replacing the battery throw some error codes?

Thanks in advance for your advice.
Yes you will get an error code for the battery removal depending on the year of your bike. If you have a recent security system you will need to flip a few switches so the security system knows that the battery removal was intentional.
Historic error codes are no big deal. Just an annoyance. If you take your bike in for service a good shop should return it with all history cleared.
I cleared mine cuz it pizzed me off to see the light come back on.
How do I reset the error on my 2003. I did a search and it explains it for the 04 and 05 models.
For the 03 Softail EFI without using "Scanalyzer"
I $hit you not this is straight from the manual.
Start engine
Let run for at least 5 seconds
Turn engine off
Repeat 50 times !!

So I would give the 04 procedure a try. It may work. If not you can follow the above or stop in at your local dealer. If anyone has the Electrical Diagnostics manual for the 03 Touring bikes please post the procedure to clear historic codes here.
IMHO, i believe that the way this is described in his post is absolutely normal. My FKC does the same thing and has since new, bith I and the dealer checked for codes and there are none.
