I've ridden both. The Dyna is an old school feel (vibration), while the softail feels more refined with its balanced motor. Due to its lighter weight, the Dyna will be faster and handle quicker through the twisties. If you ride long distances most of the time, then I think the softail is a good choice.
Good answer! I also have had both, but definitely prefer the Softail Deluxe for my personal riding style. My Deluxes have taken me on a lot of road trips, including Sturgis #73 and #75.
I love all the people that chime in on "Buy a Softail" or "Buy a Dyna" or even "Buy a touring bike"...and they got no idea how the OP rides, what he's looking for in a bike, or what he wants to do with it...crazy...
Dont step down to a Softail, Step up to a Dyna. Softails are for those insecure about having both of their feet on the ground. If you want a mans bike get a Dyna
Ground clearance issues on softails only make this bike a straight runner.
It's been 7 years since the OP originally posted. I'm betting the OP either already decided or never bought a bike. Probably several times over. I've had several bikes myself since
I have a 1992 Softail and I am approaching the limit of its lean angle. I ride mostly around town. I like everything about my Softail except the limited lean. I am contemplating another bike. I have considered something like Road King, Street Glide or Road Glide, but those seem like they are better suited to long distance riding. So I am thinking that something in the Dyna line might give me a little better handling and be suitable for my needs.
I am not a super speedy rider nor am I very experienced. I am just considering something that will give me a bit more room before I start scraping parts on the road.

Don't think you understand how the term speed relates to others. You are a crazy rider for sure. A turn on a city street with perfect grip Monday may have a tad of oil on it Friday. Grow up. .......
