Have faith, like the folks above, we went through the same thing. My youngest daughter (13 now) was a month & a half early, scary stuff, but now she's a typical teen. I know you are all worrying, but I'm sure the little guy will be fine. Plus my oldest daughter is due next month, I'll be a grandpa for the first time, so I know how you feel.
My future riding buddy was born today (grandson). He was premature. I'm really worried, his lungs are under developed and he wasn't breathing for what seemed like minutes during and after birth. He's in NICU, where he will remain for a month according to doctors.
My heart goes out to you and your family. My daughter was born 2.5months early (2lbs 10oz) and spent 6.5 weeks in nicu and she came out just fine. Don't want to be the bearer of bad news but with underdeveloped lungs, your grandson will probably be there longer than a month. How preemie was your grandson?
In retrospect, 6.5 weeks isn't that long but it sure felt like an eternity. My daughter had apnea where she would just stop breathing. Scary as hell. She came home on a heart monitor. If she stops breathing, this thing makes a racket that would wake the sleeping dog down the road.
Oh, she was born on 8/4/08. She's 8.5lbs now and doing great. Your grandson will also do great.

I work in the NICU at Winne Palmer Hospital. We are the 4th largest in the nation. As mentioned before his condition is not unusual for a "preemie". At our hospital all premature babies go to NICU for at least a week. The care given and survival rate of these babies has grown astronomically in the last 16 years since we first opened a NICU.
At that time a 2 pound baby had a 15% chance of survival. Today it's 98% and getting better al the time. Just listen to the Doc's and he and you will be fine.
JUNO, CONGRATULATIONS!!!! My grandaughter was several weeks early too. She barely weighed 3 lbs. We were all worried and scared for about 4 weeks, but now, she is 3 years old and growing like a weed. I thank God for the doctors and nurses who tended to her as well as His healing touch. I pray that He will heal your grandson and that he will be bouncing on grandpa's lap very soon.
Modern medicine really is a blessing. Premature babies have a much higher survival rate thanks to the hard work of our medical professionals and to the advances in medicine. I know that the high cost of medical insurance and medical services is a big issue right now, however what is the value of that little baby's life?
