I had a major head on accident in the 1970's and it freaked me out so bad I quit riding for over 20 years. This was a huge mistake now that I look back as I denied myself many years of enjoyment and fun. When I finally did get back on my hands were shaking for the first hour....then I pulled over at a Starbucks and sat in the parking lot having a coffee and a cigar and said a prayer for protection, courage and relaxation. That was 4 1/2 years ago. After that I was fine. I think about my crash everytime I ride but I am not afraid anymore. I say get back on. If you are a person of faith, pray for protection and wisdom. I'll say a prayer for your safety as well. Best of luck. KB

BTW, you now have a level of wisdom many of those who ride will never know.

Oh yeah almost forgot....get some louder pipes if you don't have em.

There is no advice other than to say, follow your heart. Been down a few times, and lucky enough to be able to decide for me whether or not to keep riding. You gotta do the same, for you. There's no question; you can't get hurt in a MC wreck if you don't ride. You can also live your life in a bubble. Somewhere in between, you decide how much to gamble. Do the smart thing like you did, and wear protective gear, and you reduce the gamble to a calculated risk. One more piece of advice; Maybe consider not "riding" to work. The commuter driver in cars are a sick bunch with more distractions than I care to deal with. Glad you're feeling better.

Boy Franchise, you could not be more right about the commute. I have already decided that part is a no brainer. Yes, on a few REALLY nice days, I might still do it, but for the most part the stop and go ride to work in traffic is no better on a bike. To be honest, there is just not a good way to get from my house to work without hitting traffic. I think the bike will be for weekends and trips in the future....

I had a bad wreck one time, 28 days in the hosptial the first time and then a couple of times there after for ''mantainance'', off work for 18 months. Right after i got home, and got the full length cast off my right leg, i got back on the bike, in the garage. It felt good, but, i still had a short cast on the lower leg. Finally got it off, and started riding again, THAT felt good. My wife , i think blamed the bike, it wasn't it's fault or mine, bad gash in the road threw me into the guard rail. I took the bike out one day, did a dumb thing , rolled it Way up to triple digets on the speedo, came home, told the wife to put the bike in the paper. Sold it, took me 25 yrs to get another one, she complained and got all mad, but, hay, i'm not going to be the guy sitting on the porch watching guys ride by and the grand kid say's ''granddad, did you ever own a Harley'' and the guy looks sorta sad and say's ''nope'' so, i bouth 2, lol it takes time to ''rethink'' things, but, you'll probably get back on and enjoy it all over again. Glad your here to tell us about it.

I got hit by a truck in 2000 & nearly lost a leg. As soon as I could kick the bike again I was back on. I was a bit nervous at first, but it comes back to you.

Had another bad one 1 1/2 years ago. That one cost me an arm. As soon as my settlement comes in, there will be a new Harley. I've ridden on the back with a few friends since the wreck & I'm not nervous at all this time.

Just take your time & the nerves will smooth out. Plus the experience will make you a better rider! Good luck!

Thumbs down

Sort of going through the same thing myself. Six weeks ago an animal came in front of me at night . I put on the brakes and the next thing I know I'm flying through the air. Broke my wrist(still in cast)and banged up my shoulder pretty good. Was wearing shorts at the time and was lucky enough to not to get a scratch.
When I was riding I was always very cognizant of other vehicles but never thought what an animal could do to you. I know that when I'm able to ride again I'm not looking forward to riding at night ! I want to be able to see all that's around me.
