Flying to San Fran (from Chicago) on Friday to meet up with a buddy who just moved out there for a job. I will be doing the fly n ride deal (great price by the way - compared to regular "rental" businesses) on a Road Glide. We are planning on riding Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Looking for some ideas for day rides. He is new to the area and doesn't know what to suggest. I told him I want to go up or down (or both) route 1 but other than that, I am open. Does anyone have any suggestions?
You're coming to good riding country! For a great day ride, go down hwy1 to Santa Cruz, turn right at the first light into town, head toward the water and you will be on West Cliff Drive... cruise "The Cliffs", check out the wharf and continue to 41st ave; head back up to hwy1 on 41st ave. Ride down to Monterey (or farther... just remember much has burned.... don't know). On your way back up the coast, you may want to catch hwy9 at Santa Cruz and go north about 40 miles and turn north on "Skyline Blvd." aka hwy35. Ride back up to "South SF" along the crest of the Santa Cruz mountains (rated by some rags to be one of the best rides in U.S.).... Or you you could just ride out to Yosemite, which would be an overnite ride. Everybody should see Yosemite. PM me if you want.
Don't know how far you want to ride in a day, but the "Avenue of the Giants" is not too far north on the 101. Or just jump on the 1 and go in either direction, like you said. When you pick up your rental, ask for a map.
If you brought some gear to keep you toasty, +1 on the Avenue of the Giants (redwoods are huge) and if you got the time haul *** down south to do Hwy 1, riding far up north this time of year can be really cold.
Thanks guys for the helpful comments. I UPS'd my gear last week and my bud will have it waiting for me at the dealer. Sounds like we can't go wrong with HiWay 1. The weather is looking good for the three day weekend. My bud called today just completely out of his freakin mind with excitement. I can't wait to get out of Chi town for a few days. Will let you know how it turns out and will try to take some pics. Happy riding...for those who still can given the time of the year.
