I was cruising down the interstate on Sunday afternoon at about 75 when I saw 3 baggers coming up behind me- I was in the number 3 of 4 lanes. 2 split and went to my left in the number 2 lane, the third pulled up right next to me in my lane on my right side and just cruised with me for almost 5 miles. The other 2 riders rode side by side in their lane. I was not happy about riding side by side with someone whose riding style I do not know at all. Guess it was a compliment that he felt safe doing that. What would you have done in this case? Traffic was pretty heavy so no real great way out of it.
We ride staggered at highway speeds no matter how many of us there are.. I certainly wouldnt share a lane with someone I didnt know If I wouldnt do it with someone I have riding with for years.. Easy solution is to simply back off the throttle for 15 seconds and let them go on there way.. I assume from your handle that youre a female rider, and please forgive me if Im wrong.. My wife rides her Own RoadKing and finds when riding alone that other riders (Male) seem to assume certain liberties with her personal riding space that they never would with mine, is somehow acceptable.. She does exactly what I suggested , lets off the throttle for 15 seconds or so and lets them go on there way. If that doesnt work, she can always resort to The Look There is no mistaking that your in the wrong place at the wrong time at that point..

At times, I will ride with an unfamiliar rider along side of me. First, I am comfortable enough with my own riding skills and I do keep an eye on the other rider. Also, I give that rider enough room to move safely. If not feeling good about the other, I will slow or speed up to create a cushion.
Most times, with other riders, I ride in the staggered position.
Oh, there's no messing around in that situation. I just pull out my protector, point it at them, and tell them to get the freaking he11 out of MY space. NOOOO, I don't do that!! Kidding...just trying to look like a bad-azz biker chick!
I do exactly what PT said, back it off, or gun it to get away from anything that I don't want around me.
And you are right PT, it is very strange what men will do when I am out riding alone as apposed to the OM being there. Most are very polite, but there are a few that think it's ok to screw with women on bikes. I use the look too!!! And if that dosen't work, well, then I DO become a bad azz biker chick!!

+2 here
No disrespect towards anyone but the only one I trust to ride side by side with me is my brother and we've ridden together for over 35 years now.

Good for you, theres just no sense in male ego on two wheels. L.ray
I don't ride side by side since about twenty five years ago when my bud who I had ridden with for the prior twenty years thought we were going to change lanes and I didn't! It's amazing how hard it is to steer a bike when you are tangled up with another one. Both went into the ditch with no major injuries (lucky) since then I don't ride side by side with anyone. I'll slow down as much as I need to till they get the message.

Engraved Rebellion: Inside Bundnerbike's Glam Rock II
traffic was running pretty heavy all around us and I really could not either slow way down nor speed up . I have been riding for 38 years and have full confidence in my riding but no clue as to his skill level. I like to leave room around me for the unexpected and felt he was taking that option away from me. I had on ff helmet so really could not give him the evil eye. Needless to say I was very happy when they got off the freeway
