I'm liking what I'm hearing so far....keep it coming, PLEASE!!!

As to the question in the similarity in sunny vs rainy days, it's true that TECHNICALLY they're close. The difference is this: In the south valley here, even if it's "clear" or "cloudless", there is, quite often throughout the year, a heavy fog or even mist that blots out the life giving power of the great yellow orb. Often, that mist is more like a fine rain. Even though the weather-liars say it's going to be sunny, it really means higher than 200 feet up...

What are the most scary weather situations you've been through. (For me, so far the worst was the Mt. St. Helens eruption, back in 1981...)

Jobs:
Of course, we'll be looking for work. My wife works in an office environment (currently health insurance, as a "Marketing-Agent Coordinator), but has been in many different office environments almost all of her adult life. As for me, I'm a grunt with a bit of a bad back. currently (and for most of my life), I drive a large box-truck 300 miles per day, and a little warehouse work. I'd REALLY like to find another railroad conductor spot, if they're available. Anything you can tell us about the availability of good jobs in east Texas would be HIGHLY APPRECIATED!!!
Weather's not scary, it's entertaining!

If your wife is in the health field, she would be in the right place. Medical industry strong here. Insurance too. Target stores have a HUGE distribution center just 7 miles north of Tyler. Walmart has one in Palestine (pronounced Pal-us-steen) 30 miles south. Neiman Marcus has one in Longview. Railroad is Union Pacific and they have shops in Palestine and a very large yard in Longview and another in Mineola which is 20 or so miles north of Tyler. KCS has a huge yard in Shreveport 80 miles east of here.

Riding in East Texas is very good. As many have said, FM roads are outstanding and FM 315 just south of here is considered the best Texas motorcycle road outside of the central Texas Hill Country. Hill Country, Oklahoma mountains and the Ozarks are within easy riding distance.

Smith County Sheriff Deputies not all that bad and I hear that at least one Smith County Commissioner likes to ride a 2008 Black Pearl Street Glide with a little extra blingy-bling here and there.

I have lived all over Texas and we do get some extreme weather from time to time. High winds are usually along the coast or in the western parts of the state. Yes, we do get some really good thunderstorms, but I can only remmeber 3 or 4 times where I couldn't even drive a car. It was like a strobe light going off. You will learn to find cover and enjoy the show. Smith County is far enough north so that it is not really affected too much from hurricains or tropical storms. You may get a rain event out of it, but seldom the damaging winds. Most weather concerns here are from our newer residents, it takes about a year for people to adjust to the heat if they are from any of the northern states.

I think Texas has the best riding of any state. I know there are great roads all over this country to ride on, but Texas really has a great system of FM (farm to market) roads that are well maintained and well marked. You can easily go anywhere in the state and never have to get on an Interstate unless you want to. Other than the "3 sisters" northwest of San Antonio and a few others there are few famous riding roads here, but having 1000's of decent roads to ride makes up for it in my opinion.

As others have mentioned, you can ride year round down here. While last week at this time it actually snowed in Houston (ok, it was only 10 flakes) and today it was 76 with a low of 65 tonight.

That is the area I am looking strongly at when I retire again. Spent 8 years in the Shreveport La area, always liked fishing the lakes in East Tx and there are a bunch of them. As a lot of folks here have said its a right friendly area, nice weather and lots of good riding roads with a wide variety of scenery depending on which way you head off.

Just talked to my wife, born and raised in Texas. Lived outside Longview for 15 years and is bending my ear about it being a great place to ride! Can't comment on current job market, she has been a Hoosier transplant now for 8 years, probably going to have to trail with me to AZ.

But to the point, she is raving about what a great area it is. (go figure) We took the older daughter, son-in-law and the bikes to east Texas for a week summer before last. Got to admit I loved it also.......high on the list to find a way to settle there eventually.
