My old 1200 Sporty has 52,000 hard, hotroding miles on it. Never a minutes trouble with the bike in any way. Dam good little Harley, I don't care what any "REAL" biker says about it!

Just had a look at my old Sporty's dyno sheet; 100hp/88ft lbs but the torque came on between 3500-4000 and the motor turned just over 6500 rpm on the dyno...not good numbers for an 1100lb touring bike combo. A sixth gear would've been nice in the XL's; they kinda have the potential to be the "new" FXR's I figure, especially weight wise. The vast majority of HD's customers, other than the Bagger crowd, want 'em low and loud...

Cross country with everything? My FXDXT and my credit card??? Just kidding; but with a bit of work, and the 4.5 gal tank, would a rubber-mount sporty make a cool second generation FXR???

Every time this comes up I have to scratch my head.

Seems like it wasnt that long ago I had a 74 inch Shovel. If memory serves me correctly, aint a 1200 about the same darn thing?

If this is the case, there isnt an argument that a sporty cant do the same as a BT. It can, just a different approach.

By the way, I dont ever remember my shovel having the get up and go like the 1200 does now....

Yep. 1200cc/74ci was the big twin for many years. My bud has a 74ci shovel superglide and is not near as quick as the 1200 sporty. I heard it had to do with the cams in the newer sportster engine that gave it an edge on the ole' BT's. Having said that, you can not beat the sound of that ole' shovel.

Here's a 1200:

And here's another:

Momma's 'new' (to us) Sporty is an 883. (The old 900's) It only has 2217 miles, so will run it like that for a while. Then bore out cylinders, add Keith Black pistons, gasket set, and for less than $350, a 1200. Any bets on which one of the three is the first one to town?

Sportys are sports cars, Big Twins are tractors. They were designed to 'lug' weight around.
