Question 1200 vs TC96

I've been reading a lot of good comments regarding the Sportster's 1200. Is there a reason why HD does not use that motor on any of its other models?

Actually thats a great question and as one that owns both ... My Opinion is that they Felt the Big Twins needed to be more competitive with the Bigger Rice Burners in Engine Size actually the Latest 1200 with the XB Heads can give you more power than one would ever need...

I enjoy my Sportster,I really had fun when the guys were snickering about my new little girlie bike, till I tore them a new ******* over and over with my stock girlie bike,no one brings it up anymore, one guy told me it's a good thing that the Nightster sits low and drags or we could never keep up!

I would say because it doesn't produce enough torque for the bigger and heavier bikes. For the smaller and lighter Sportster it is a very potent combination. I wouldn't change a thing ...

They don't use it because the other bikes ain't designed for it. The Sporty drivetrain is and has always been a single unit...tranny and engine in one case. All the others use an engine and tranny as separate units bolted together.

Good question! I think the MoCo should have done headwork or an over bore and a larger throttle body on the TC88 versus stroking it to get to 100 cubes. The 1200 engine has lots of potential IMO. I had an 883 which was a fun bike but have always liked the 1200C. If the MoCo would have put a 6 speed in the 1200C I would have bought that instead of my dyna. The whole keeping up with the joneses with displacement is ridiculous. I say the Moco should focus on increased power and driveability and reliability. Not just a bigger is better attitude. JMHO.

Close, VERY close. They didn't actually start 'bolting them together' until 79, when they came out with the rubber mounted shovel with the 5 spd, FLT.
In 65, they came out with 'electric' kickstart. That was the appearance of the aluminum primary, need some place to bolt the starter to. Before that, tin primaries, and you need to 'align' tranny to the motor. And yes, it can be frustrating to accomplish at times.
But the Sporty was and still is, 'unit' construction. Whole different ballgame.
The "Grampa" of the Sporties was the "K" model. The "X" designation started in 57, I believe, first Ironheads. I believe Ironheads became the 'name' because of us dummies that bought those vibratin', oil drippin' critterz. (Wisht I had my Bicentennial 76 XLCH in the grudge)

FYI, I read an article while back, the Chinese Military Police, use 883's. Go finger!?!?!

Not any more. Saw one in a dealership a while ago, and it had a Rotax engine.
