Question USED vs. NEW

Looking at buying a Softail Classic. Lots of used bikes around, particularly 2006 and earlier. Prices are not all that much less than new. Is it worth the few thousand dollars savings to go used? With financing is it really any cheaper to go used? Giving up the six speed and maybe injection is it worth it? Based on how I have seen some guys treat their bikes, is it worth it?

Really depends on what you're looking for.

Lots of low mileage, well cared for bikes out there for very good prices.
6 vs 5 speed, no big to me.
Carb vs EFI both have good and bad sides.
Financing is getting tighter because banks have less to loan and your credit score has to be pretty good.

New vs Used, your choice but I know there's deals to be had.

Given there is such a small difference in price on newer models , why get one you have no clue on how it was ridden or maintained , PLUS the warranty , for whatever it's actually worth.

The vast majority of posts I've read rave about the 6 speed over the 5. EFI seems more trouble free to me than carb. Who would ever go back to carbs on their car. Not me.

Like or not it is a buyers market. Just look hard there are some exellent deals on some great equipment that has sat in the garage that has never been used. Some of these situations are real sad so just be fair to the poor family.

Just baffles me.

PP is the best way to go the dealers still think their stuff is gold plated,

If you finance, used rates are higher than new.And you get less months to pay them off, depending on the year. This and the fact that there seems to be very little in price difference, makes me think NEW.

'07 Deluxe in black with 4400 miles on eBay just ended; reserve not met; bids at $5650. This tells me somebody's gonna get it in the nads on used bike sales in the immediate future...wish I was in the market for another bike now.
The tone of your post indicates that you would probably feel better about buying new with a full warranty; if so that's what you should do.....

I'm surprised to hear that you guys are not finding a big diff between new and used prices. Around here, if someone is looking to sell a used bike it has to be priced right. In October I bought a slightly used '08 Crossbones loaded up w/accessories from a priivate seller. An easy $5K savings not including sales tax over a new purchase. It ended up costing the original owner about $6 per mile to ride it the little he did.

I searched for a bike on Cycle Trader and found my 2005 SE Fat Boy, 2-1/2 years ago.
The original owner had traded it in at a HD dealership, for a new Thunder Mountain Chopper. It was only 14 months old and he had only put 1,000 miles on it. He had added $6,000 in extras to it. I got it for less then the book value, that listed a stock used SE Fat Boy.
Even my wife was surprised that I was going to buy a used bike, instead of one of the new 2007 models, which had just come out. I have been very happy with my decision.

I've been on ebay a lot lately and nobody is buying (at least the soft tails anyway). Nobody is really lowering their price either though. The economy still has a ways to go down before it starts looking up again so people will only be getting more desperate to sell. At the same time, dealers say that prices always go up closer to spring. I'm not so sure THIS year. I am holding off until I get my price.
