Bikers speeding or not, should not some criticism be aimed at the guy that pulled out in front of them? No one has mentioned that the pickup driver failed to yield the right of way. Or did he have the right of way? Doesn't sound like it when witnesses say the truck "pulled out in front of them".
Where I am from drivers pulling out from a stop sign are legally obligated to properly judge the approaching right of way traffic before pulling out into traffic. Jus' sayin'.

The pick-up truck did not have the right of way, he had a stop sign. I don't know the legalities, maybe someone else does.
Sad deal, young and reckless don't go together well and neither do cage drivers not paying attention.
I know there has been a lot of talk about kids coming back wide open from the Middle East but before we blame that on this death do we know for sure that this kid was in fact a combat veteran? I haven't seen that mentioned anyway, onl that he was an enlisted solider stationed at Ft Benning.
I hate to hear about the lost of a life. On a bike or car. We have all done things on bikes we shouldn't. I have done things in my cage that I shouldn't have. That's why they are called accidents. More sad for the family and their loss.
Personally I hate the suggestion that there is a problem with combat vets coming back and buying bikes. It just adds to the overall view within our society that motorcycles are far too dangerous for any rational person to choose to ride one when, in my opinion, our society would benefit a great deal if far more people rode motorcycles. Motorcycles are not needlessly dangerous, an MSF course does a more than adequate job of teaching one how to safely operate a motorcycle, they know the risks involved, they are adults, it is their choice and that isn't a problem. I don't care how much we spend on training them they don't have a responsibility to avoid any and all possible causes of death and we really don't want them to.
I don't think there's a "problem" with combat vets buying bikes. I think there's a reason why they might be more inclined to be riskier riders than most. But if they weren't on bikes they'd probably be doing the same thing in a car.
That is all an aside, however, because the emphasis should be put on the typical cager that has murdered yet another biker because he really wasn't paying attention. That's what needs to be targeted in our society.

The coroner identified him today. He was a ranger from Portland, OR. No mention of his combat experience, but if I were to guess, I'd say that he's been there. Just my guess.
