This maybe the wrong place for this, but I what the hey!
I see that the 2009 Canadian National HOG Rally is to be held in Calgary Alberta Aug 13-15. I know it is early, but this would be a nice ride up from Las Vegas, touring Idaho, Montana and Alberta.
Looking for any info on this rally.
1. How many would be in attendence at a Canadian Rally?
2. Lodging around Lake Louise
3. Day rides to do? Anything in Red Deer?
4. I believe the typical weather should be in the 70s????
5. Things to do and see in Calgary.
Hi, I,m from Calgary and presently live here. This will be my first Hog Rally as I just got my first H-D bike. Lots to see and do around the city. Plenty of great day rides. When you do come up go through Glacier National Park, going to the sun road is spectacular.
Call any of our local dealerships, Kanes H-D, Calgary H-D or Gasoline Alley in Red Deer.
See you in August.
That trip is on my list even if Calgary is 2000 miles from Ottawa and it's a little long. I would love to go. I've been to Calgary a few times (plane or car) and I have pictures of the Canadian Rockies in my album.
I've done the reverse trip (from Calgary to Las Vegas) by car 20 years ago and there was so much to see. I would highly recommend it.
- Highway 40 through the kananaskis park. You'll pass the village where they held the '88 winter olympics, then you'll go over the highwood pass, which is the highest paved road in Canada.
- Highway 22 through bragg creek is a popular day ride
- East out the transcanda to dinasaur provincial park, look at the badlands and the tyrell museum. World renouned location for paleontology research (dinosaur bones)
- West out highway 1a to Banff national park. A two lane twisty highway, more interesting for a bike than the 4 lane divided transcanada highway.
- The Johnson Canyon road in Banff national park is a spectacular ride.
We went to the Canadian National Rally in 2007 and was surprised by the attendance. There were only 1500 or so pre-registered but they expected another 500 or so to show up. We were told that was a good year. I am glad they are happy, I guess I just got used to the numbers in the States. We have that many for our IL Rally.
BTW: had a great time, the people were absolutely wonderful. Had more than one (not rally people or even bikers) go out of their way (way out of their way in one case) to help us when we were lost, looking for food, etc. Anyone in the States thinking about the CNR, I would highly recommend it. The state rally's are sort of the same old stuff, at least the CNR would give you the experience to experience Canada, just make sure you get off the main road and visit the locals.

Anyone else care to add to the list??
Highway 22 North along the Rockies to your left. Through Sundre, Caroline, Rocky Mountain House, Nordegg and finally into Jasper National Park then South along 93 to Banff. A great loop to tour.
Depending on how twisty you like your roads, you could come up to Bonners Ferry in Idaho, to Creston BC, to Revelstoke, then across through Banff to Calgary...Creston to Revelstoke is one of my favorite roads anywhere...

Sturgis is the first week of August ... but it's a bit of a hefty detour east from your Vegas-Calgary route.
Weather can be unpredictable in the Canadian Rockies. I went through a 15 minute snow storm at the top of a Rocky Mountain pass to the west of Calgary during the third week of July in 1980.

Creston to Revelstoke and on to Lake Louise, then Banff...Big thumbs up.
Also Lake Louise to Jasper, or Rocky Mtn. House.
