When I bought my bike I had an ironass BMW owner tell me that I was crazy for wanting a HD. He told me I should buy a GW. Sure am glad I'm crazy. No problems here.
Yardwork, good point. my bro Vulcan gets 35 mpg on the highway. Whats that about..that is just a little better than my city mileage. And my bike is heavier.
"Behind the times" is very misleading. Harley designed a motor format long ago that continues to be what its customers want today. They've refined that design and its manufacturing process over decades. They are now very high quality motorcycles that perform exactly as they were designed to do. They are a coveted brand around the world, but they're not meant to please everyone.
Interesting that many that own a Harley would argue they are not what they should be in terms of performance hence the reason many complain and buy millions of dollars in performance upgrades each year. Harley is Harley and when you buy a Harley you get a great basic bike. In many cases it takes the new owner 6 months to a year to get it performing the way they want and this is truly a love affair with the bike. There are any number of touring bikes that have V-twins on the market and yes, the do out perform the Harley as represented by a number of shoot outs where the Harley was present in the line up. Who cares? If I wanted one of the others I would have bought one and did 2 times over in the same year I bought my Sportster. This doesn't mean I don't like the Harley, it only means I like other bikes too.
When I bought my v-rod, all I heard was "that's not a real Harley". Funny, the name on the gas tank says Harley Davison.
I have to agree, it's not the "typical" Harley bike, but it's the most incredible bike I've ever owned.
Don't get me wrong, I not bashing any other bike, metric or not. But the if you have never riden a V-Rod, you gota at least try one. There are faster bikes but it's just a great performing and handling bike. But my Fat Bob is pretty damm nice too.
I aint real keen to the styling of the VRod , but we best get used to the motor , cause I'm betting that in a few years it's gonna be THE Big Twin motor

let them say what they want. i agree with what you said about the speed thing.when you dont own one and want one. it's amazing all the problems that bike has.
Why???
simple.... every ad, every magazine beats it into our head... bigger, more power, more tourqe, wider tires, louder pipes, do burn outs....
Some people buy bikes, and ride them...
Others like to "tinker" with them... it's an American tradition. Take a stock ANYTHING, and soup it up.... "when is enough, enough?"... that's the trick.... it "ain't EVER enough"....
some body some where has ONE more HP/FT pound
OR?? some one can out handle you....
OR?? someone has more chrome/fancier paint than you
Folks get wrapped up in that stuff.... which keeps all these businesses going. Comparing one brand to another? or type... is just plain asking for dis-satisfaction.
And then you got the folks that just like to cause trouble.
