I live in NY three miles from PA. We have helmet law here and none in PA. I ride over there alot because its beautiful and the roads are better. I would say on a good weekend you might see 300-400 riders and it's probably a 50/50 mix of helmets and not. I don't think anyone really cares one way or the other. I leave mine on because I'm used to it. I also have ridden without. It's great! I just leave it on most of the time because I don't have anywhere to put it.
I live in Florida, NO HELMET LAW, but I always wear a helmet (half). I wear the helmet because no matter how safe a rider I am, I do not trust the others on the road. I would recommend you keep wearing the helmet for your safety and don't worry wheather you get strange looks on the road. You never know.. they could just be admiring your new bike(bike envey). Best of luck on the road and stay safe.
Wear it or don't wear it. At least in your state they let you act like a grown up and decide for yourself. They are still dressing us here. Someday we may be granted back the freedom of choice and be allowed to dress ourselves as we sit fit..someday..maybe..
Will a helmet protect my head in an accident better than no helmet?
If the answer is yes, then you should probably wear one. If the answer is no, then don't bother.
While some stats show this or that, none of them are completely accurate because they can't possibly know all the variables so they are forced to lump groups together.
Will a novelty helmet protect my head in a crash better than no helmet? I say the answer is yes, and you can talk to a friend of mine if you wanna hear his personal experience on it. He wears a DOT helmet now, as a result of going down. If he had worn nothing, he would be dead.
Even a pair of jeans protects your legs far better than bare skin.
If it offers protection, I'll wear it. I've always worn a helmet and always will. Let Darwin sort them out.
I'm guessing you limit that statement to helmets? or are you riding around in full crotch rocket race gear? I wear a helmet and I wear boots and jeans....aside from that I wear leather when it's cold....the protection the leather offers is a nice freebie.
If you really are wearing all that stuff, I stand corrected. Your name isn't Joe, is it? http://www.joerocket.com/
The numbers are the numbers. If half of the wrecks with head injuries occurred with and the other half with head injuries occurred without.....that kinda sums it up.
A 14 year old study in Europe does not really translate to the US and now.
The MAIDS study was done in 2004 and the interesting thing about that report is the findings were very similar to those of the HURT study. Better yet, the study was done in countries that actually force a rider to to get a real license as opposed to giving them away in every box of Fruit Loops. I personally don't care whether they have or don't have helmet laws as I wear one all the time. However, to say a rider is anywhere near as safe in any accident where head trauma would be an issue without a properly worn approved helmet is ludicrous. You can ask my son in law how he broke his nose. He now wears a helmet and the grandkids still laugh about that one. He was going less than 10mph but then again, so was Gary Busey.
Hell, what ain't a fashion show these days. And you're judged on how cool you look. It's all a crock of chit. Some people really miss out on making friends that look.....average. Shakespear said a wise addage..that all the worlds a stage, and we are the players.... BTW, screw those closed minded bufoons that give you odd looks

Sounds like you may have other more pressing issues to deal with besides the helmet. I can promise you that these people aren't shunning you simply because of a helmet. It could be your assless chaps or your fingerless gloves they have the issues with. It ain't the helmet...but then again - post a photo of it. It ain't neon pink with a green mohawk thingy on it - is it?
dude, if you are worried what other people think of you for what you wear or what you ride, then you have issues. Do what you like to do because it's what "you" want to do, not to impress or try to fit in.
