CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Collisions involving motor vehicles and deer are becoming enough of a menace in West Virginia that the Legislature is getting involved.
Lawmakers decided Sunday they want an in-depth study of the problem and possible remedies done in this year's legislative session, which starts next month.
Last year, State Farm Insurance said vehicles in West Virginia have a one in 45 chance of colliding with deer -- the highest rate in the nation and a spot the state also occupied the previous year.
Paul Johansen with the state Division of Natural Resources says the problem doesn't have any obvious solutions.
Signs flashing warnings to drivers have shown mixed results, and other measures -- like whistles mounted on automobile hoods -- don't work.
The only part about it that I do not understand is they (the state or dot) put up those warning signs to alert us about the deer crossing, but how in the heck do the deer know where to cross? They should only cross at the signs, but they don't, they are everywhere.
deer are creatures of habit and will predominatley cross in the same general areas. i have had a few close encounters with deer. while riding in wv i had a doe leap over my front end. oh yea we were taking a short cut that ended up being 30 miles of gravel roads. another thing wv is famous for. this picture is the aftermath. always has to be someone there to laugh their *** off at you.
I live in Douglas County Oregon (southern part of Oregon) and 2 years ago they reported that in our county alone, they had picked up over 400 deer on the road that had been hit by a vehicle. This doesn't include the ones that were hit and managed to get off the road and into the bushes, there is no accurate count for that number.
