As long as you continue to follow the MOCO's recommendations for maximum rpm's until you have 500 miles on the odometer, you should be fine.

Have a safe trip!

There are a thousand different opinions on this, I think youll be fine as long as your easy on it and monitor your fluid levels. Bring each gear to the top of its run without going over on the RPM. Nice and smooth until you get your 1000 miles in. Enjoy. I changed all my fluids myself at 500 miles and switched to amsoil, Im just **** about getting the first 500 miles of clutch shavings and gasket material out of my engine. Treat 'er good and she'll treat you better. [sm=drlove.gif]

Just don't run at the same speed for any extended period of time and you should be fine.

What he said. You should NOT run at highway speed in 5th gear more than 30 miles at a time.

This is my take on things:

Follow the recommended RPM limits for break-in, and yes try to work the bike throughout the RPM...but don't be "hard" on it...especially during the break in period.

Also...I firmly believe you should change the oil several times during break in, for this reason: On a new engine, the gears, etc...are getting "settled"...during this process you'll get fine metal shavings between the gears, etc...the more frequent you change your oil...the better.

Here's what I've done for all 4 of my motorcycles over the years.

During break in: ride per the recommended break in procedured by the manufacturer
Change oil at 500, 1000, 1500, and 2000 miles.

I usually switch to synthetic (I personally use AMSOIL) at 2000 miles and at that point I change every 5000 miles (yes you can go further, but for me, a 5000 mile interval is easy to remember).

I've had zero problems with this procedure and all my bikes have given me flawless service.

Some may, may not agree with this...but this what I do and I feel it's a good practice.

Some may also say that you don't need to change your oil that much up front...maybe so...but an oil change is easy and in expensive (especially if you do it yourself)...and it's "cheap insurance" for a healthy engine.

Anyway...hope this helps a little.

My last Harley (a heritage EVO) I did the first 800km (500miles) the day I picked it up and took it in for the first service the following day. It was easy as I was on my own and could follow the moco recommendations on running it. Doing 400 miles now at 230 will not hurt it, go for it.

You'll be fine. Just vary your speed and don't hot rod it and you'll have years of good service from it.

Just picked my 06' dyna up. Got 150 miles on it. You say 500 miles is good for the first oil change? Thanks
Rick
