IT all depends on the local - I live in the Milwaukee Metro and there are like 6 chapters. I belong to Racine Chapter - because it seems to be a nice group - lots of rides and activities. We like it a lot. You have to find an active local, or it is not worth it
I was a national HOG member from 1994 to 2007 and attended only one function, 2003 HD birthday bash in Milwaukee. The nearest Chapter is 100 miles away, but rarely do I have the opportunity to get there on meeting night, or the weekend rides, so I dropped my membership. If I lived closer to a chapter, and had more time to attend functions, I woulod renew my membership, but as it stands now, I'll not bother. I've never used the roadside assistance as I have not needed it.
I do think it's a great way to meet other riders and socialize, though.
Lifetime HOG member and have been for a long time. Active in local group as a primary officer. As others have stated you get out of it what you put into it.
iam a life member 1991 of hog it was nice to get the mag and package ever yr even that i was not riding some dealers give you 10% off that is just about gone have not checked out local chapter yet but did sign up for a state event it sems they have the milage program also something else to do
thanks gabe
Our Sponsor Dealership give the Local HOG Chapter members 10% off for 6 times. We also have a mileage contest which goes from 4/1 to 10/31. Who ever has the most miles driven in that period, gets a new tire. We had a club member who belonged to two different Chapters, got the high mileage in both Chapters and got himself a new set of tires. Not a bad deal.
We purchased our Wide Glide from a larger dealer. The people at the HOG meetings seemed to stick together and left the "newbies" standing around by ourselves. We didn't renew the membership after the free year. My brother bought his bike from a smaller dealer and has enjoyed doing things with his HOG group. I guess everyone's different. My wife and I tend to prefer riding by ourselves rather than as part of a group.
have a look where your local chapter is, go and meet them, most chapters have regular meetings followed by rides, I would talk to your local chapter, introduce yourself, ask if you can join a few meetings and rides with them and then see how you feel about the chapter and the people in them.
All opinions here about the good and bad of the HOG chapters, their members and whatever else are well opinions of others. The only one that can really decide for yourself is well...yourself.
I have had both good and not so good experiences with HOG chapters. all are usually very welcoming and try hard to organize a lot of rides. Sometimes I have met people that i gelled with and that made me want to stay a member, other times there was not alot of going on or peeps that i want to spend time with.
I joined a local H.O.G. Chapter last year and at the time, said I'd probably go on one or two rides here and there. Well, less than a year later, I am an officer and look forward to the riding season when it finally gets here.
Very good group of folks. NO alcohol on rides (or before). Off season events for those who are interested. Local charity drives. You get the message.
I'm not %100 involved but want the Chapter to grow and do my part to help that happen. For ME, joining a local chapter has been a good experience to date.
As others have said, go to a meeting as a guest. Hear what plans they have. Learn more about them. Then, go from there. Good luck!
As a primary officer for the last 3 years I have met some really great people and really enjoy it all. We have some great rides and again this year. But as others have said it is what you make it. Most of us want to be positive, Ride and have fun, that is why we bought Harleys, but there is always some negative that has to be dealt with.
