Been a diabetic for 15 years. Been on the pump for 2 months. Best thing I ever did. I go thru about 1000 units of insulin a week, but man do I feel soooo much better. And you are correct about freeing up your life. Insurance paid 100 % of the price for my pump (almost $6000.00). Good luck with your diabetes and ride safe.

Diagnosed Type II in 2002 and on pills for 2 years. Now on the needle and find that I can control it 99% of the time.

One issue is that when my BG level drops while riding it drops pretty fast so I check often and carrry snacks and a glucose tube for a quick boost.

The folks I ride with know about it and it's not a problem to them.

All I can say is do it! If they ever find something wrong early enough it can be cured or managed. The way we treat our health I liken to the way some people take care of their cars. If you maintain it properly it will last a long time, those that never open the hood or look at things start having issues when the car gets high mileage.
As a mechanic seeing those kind of car issues you cant fix it, they will nickle and dime you to death. Same as a human. I just went to a funeral 2 days ago for a very dear colleague. I worked with him every day for the last 22 years.
A few months back he keeled over at work with stomach pain, he refused an ambulance. Went on vacation at christmas and never came back. He had stage 4 cancer and it spread where the treatment killed him.
Sorry for the long wind, Im still bothered that I lost a friend.

Hi all,
Been a type I for 46 years. Shots all that time. The mix of long and short acting insulins is quite remarkable these days, and for God's sake, the pens and short thin needles don't even hurt. If you are on pills and you're not down in the normal range don't kid yourself, you are going to end up with complications you definetely don't want, and will force your family to take care of a handicapped person unnecessarily. If you aren't now - don't push it on them. Small price to pay.

I'm thinking of a pump, but haven't done it yet. I take my kit on trips, and ALWAYS ride with dextrose tablets in case low BS shows up. 10 to 12 hour days are no problem, just remember to stop, eat, measure and adjust. And like somebody else said, tell your riding buddies so they can help or recognize if you go to "la la land" or act a little out of it at some point.

Life is fun, don't shorten it unnecessarily.

Diagnosed 6/2006 A1C over 300 morning readings 280

No meds, controlled with diet, weight loss, and exercise.

There is a free yahoo group, diabetics helping diabetics.

A lot of good information there. Just thought I would

pass it along. Might help some others.

Glad to hear your getting it under control.

Just a clarification, though. The numbers you are talking about are blood glucose readings (often obtained via a finger-stick with a portable meter). They are a measurement of how much glucose is in the blood serum at that moment.

A1C - also known as Hemoglobin A1C or Glycosaturated Hemoglobin, is a measurement done by a laboratory, and it represents the average value of glucose in the blood over time.

In addition to performing regular self-checks as directed by a physician, diabetics should also have routine A1C testing every 3-6 months. If you're on medication, your doc should be ordering liver function tests as well.

My son was diagnosed when he was 2 yrs old, now 16 and driving a car and been on a bike since he was 10. He has been on the pump, many actually, for almost 10 yrs. His controll is awesome. He checks his #'s all the time, just before he drives and work.
He also suffers from Crones, auto immuine neutrapenia, has had most of his colan removed and had to wear a ostomy bag for over a year. At 16 he weighs only 85 pounds and stands just under 5'. He can ride a dirt bike that would put most of us to shame and will be attending the Riders Edge program this spring. He has over come and lives life to the fullest, most would never know of his medical struggle's. If you have diabetes, and have consistantly high numbers, and you think your Dr is "threatening you"......simply put, you are a fool!! A healthy diabetic is most likely healthier than most healthy folks. Keep rideing!!!!!!!

Yes sometimes I type faster than I think. A1C was over 13. Thanks for the advice, it is good.

I see my doctor every 3 months (you cannot let this get ahead of you) Last 18 months A1Cs

6 or less. If, or when I have to go on medication. I will know I tried my best to help myself, and

avoid it. The best 2 things I have found that we all can use legumes & apple cider vinegar
