Been diabetic for about 10 years now and recently went on an insulin pump ( Minimed ).
It has freed me up a considerable amount and I now enjoy ridng long miles again. Anyone else dealing with diabetes and riding?
yea I have type two only on pills now with no problems, I drive trucks and if and when I have to go on insulin they will pull my medical card, but no problems riding
I was diagnosed with Type 2 about 10 years ago. Controlled it pretty well with diet until about a year ago. Finally had to go on insulin injections. I do 10 units of Lantus/Glargine(Slowacting) every 24 hours, plus Humalog/Lispro(immediate acting). Amount based on what my Blood Sugar reading is. Makes it a little more of a hassle on the bike carrying everything with me, but it doesn`t keep me from doing whatever riding
I want to do. Last summer, the wife and I rode to California. Did about 3400 miles in a little over 8 days with no problem. Just another "bump in the Road"....
I have it to. I only have to take a pill (glyburide) once a day. If I watch what I eat and drink my blood sugar rarely gets above 160. I can really tell when my sugar gets low and I need to eat. I hate that feeling and my wife calls me the biggest grump in the world when it happens.....

If you ever get told by your MD you would do better with a pump don't hesitate. You only have one small stick every 3 days compared to multiple otherwise. You program the pump after several days of readings with your MD and it determines how much to give you based on you BS readings. It will divide a large dose ( reg only ) according to what you want, ( 10 units now, the 8 more over 2 - 3 hrs for example ). If you start to go low you simply suspend the pump until you eat etc...You set different basal rates according to times of the day when you seem to be higher or lower...it does way to much to mention here. Just know its a great tool thats getting better all the time. See ya on the back roads!

Thanks Tumbleweed, I`ll keep that in mind. In fact I`ll probably ask my doc if he thinks I am a candidate for that. Sounds like a lot less hassle than what I`m doing now. Thanks.
Hey, I see on your Avatar the sign for Escondido and San Diego. I grew up in Southern Calif. Had a couple of partners who frequented a Clubhouse on El Cajon Blvd. in El Cajon. Lost touch with them quite a few years ago...
Thanks agian for the 'Pump' info....
Type II and take two oral meds. Been keeping it between 80-110 for two years this way. Hope I can do it much longer. Have riding buddy with the pump and he's doing very well with it.

My wife's been on the Omni Pod for about 2 years now, it's worked out pretty well. The biggest problem was getting through to someone at BC/BS who would approve the Pod and the equipment. Not cheap, but a whole lot better than 4-5 shots a day + the necessary finger sticks.
damn, my blood sugar stays as high as 400 at times usually dont get below 280, and that is on the max meds (pills). The doc tried to put me on shots and I told him I am fine with the pills , dont threathen me, I pay you. so I stayed on the pills.
