I always wear a jean jacket in summer, even at 100 deg. Easy to adjust for airflow with front and sleeve buttons. Admittedly not as protective as motorcycle gear, tho. But cheap, easy to wash, or sprinkle with water for cooling. Also thin natural-colored work gloves work well and don't stain when wet/sweaty.
I'm with you on the protection. I had a mesh jacket for a while that was still too hot in the Summer in San Diego day time desert heat.
Now have this Vanson mesh; same co. that makes it for Buell. Love it. Can hold it up and see through it. Breezier than my previous mesh and any other mesh I have seen.
Yes, I've been down and the full face helmet I was wearing left black mark on the side of a bus. Leather protected me from road rash. Got up and walked away. You can't always do that, but for the more 'minor' accidents that may happen I wear the gear.
Take a look at the HD switchback jackets. They are great, I use mine every day in the morning (37 degrees) and the afternoon (90+ degrees). the arms, chest and back zip off to make it a mesh jacket thats great on hot days. It also comes with a water proof liner that blocks all the cold wind.
