Default Motor mount breakage

I have a 2002 Road King Classic EFI and it keeps breaking the front Motor mount.
Anyone has a thought as to why? I have replaced it 4 times in the last 100,000 miles
Which I think is a bit excessive.

That is strange, what do you mean by break? Is it the rubber motor mount,is it wearing down.

is the bolts breaking or is it the motor mount its self?? i have had to replace one in 130,000 miles once the mounting bolts broke but they just replaced the bolts, and once the rubber wore out? wonder if your motor is out of alighment?? have the dealer check that..

Have you dealer do the procedure where they loosen all the mounts and start the engine for a minute or two and then re-torque them all. This allows the engine to center itself and realign itself on the frame. If your dealer doesn't know what this is. Politely excuse yourself and call another dealer until you find one who has done this engine alignment procedure. The wrench may be stretching the one mount when he re-installs a new one. This will take up all the play in the mount causeing it to fail prematurely. I would PM shovelhead bob about this. Good luck. KB

Also, once the realignment is done ask them to measure the space between the loose front mount and the frame ( before they tighten it back up). You may need to shim the mount if there is too much distance between the mounting bracket and the frame. This shimming should be done with stainless steel barstock drilled to the diameter of the bolt holes and using longer hi grade stainless bolts only. If there is too much distance between the mount bracket & the frame you have to stretch the mount to make it fit and meet the frame. This will also cause too much preloading on the rubber causing excessive vibration and premature mount failure.

You may need to replace the lower and upper stablizers.

Yes, it does sound as though you need to have your driveline alignment validated....

It is done by removing the bolts that hold the top and front links to the frame....

A set of screw blocks are attatched where the pass footboards go, and the Swingarm pivot shaft is pushed and rotated to a specific torque to align the driveline...

Takes about 30 minutes to do, from start to road test....

Thanks for all the suggestions Folks. The symptoms I get is a heavy metal banging on deceleration. I know the sound all to well. Up til today, the failure has been under warranty (Extended) so I have not seen the failing mount to see what the problem is.
The alignment thing sounds like a good thing to do even just for the hell of it.

When I bought the bike the day after thanksgiving 2002 I also purchased a 4 year Extended Warranty and 4 year Service contract. The warranty expired this April and the service contract not until November. I have been lazy and let the dealer deal with the problems and service up til now.
I guess I will have to get my wrenches back out now. I retired them when I bought the RK. Figured I'm retired, time to let the wrenches take a break also.

And yes 103,500 miles in 3 1/2 years. Got nothing better to do in retirement than ride.
