Took the bike in for 1000 mile maintenance today. Got to talking with the owner of the dealership about the Stage 1. He indicated he has had good luck on the dyno with the Stage 1 coupled with the Harley Pro-Performance slip ons. He showed me a bike that had them on and fired it up. Sounded great. Nice low rumble at idle, not obnoxious but just the right sound.
He had none in stock, but he showed me a set he was going to put on a custom bike. He opened the box and I read "For Racing Use Only" on the back. I was instantly sold. Simple slash downs, no end caps necessary. Bright, shinny and possibly illegal. I had to have them. He agreed to order another set for the custom and install those on my bike today. Price $319.
So they did the complete Stage 1. Air cleaner assembly, slip ons and download. The bike sounds great! Low rumble at idle and it is very quiet when the motor is just cruising. Crack the throttle and Brrrrraaappp! It comes to life.
So I pull out of the dealership, get through some lights and wick it to head up a hill. JEBUS! I almost fell off the back of the bike and I'm not kidding. What a difference in performance! Crack the throttle and it literally pulls your arms straight! It's like a whole different bike. Stock, it was just smooth and quiet. Now it rips and tears and acts like a pissed off beast. I love it.
Update on the mufflers. Search of the part number at Suburbanharley's site shows that they are in fact SE race slip ons.
Screamin' Eagle One-Piece Slash Down Performance Mufflers
These mufflers, which feature a free-flowing baffle design that allows increased performance and a deeper sound. They do not require the separate purchase of end caps, providing a more affordable performance option. For race application only.
#64903-99
Fits '95-later FLHT, FLHR, and FLTR models.
Very little. the few times it does, it's more like regular muffler noise than backfiring, if that makes any sense. I had it geared down going down a very steep hill and there was nothing.
I am totally satisfied with the pipes and the entire upgrade.
Nice!! I'm having the Stage 1 done before I pick up my Night train. I got the SE 2 slash down mufflers. Can't wait to take her out ont he road... of course I'll have to hold back until break-in is finished!
I have a stage I air cleaner, SE IIs slash downs, and a reprogram. It is a bit loud in my garage at 6:30 when I'm warming them up. I live in a bedroom community and nobody so far has complained. Out on the road, what a bust in the a$$ but around town I keep it down and have had no problems.
I getting ready to take my Road King in for its 1000 service,
I did the stage one kit and Screaming Eagle slip ons, before it ever left the dealership
I never even got to hear it with the stock set up, had .5 miles on it after they did all the
changes.
Whats the average pay out for the 1000 mile service? Im thinking about NOT takin it back
to the dealer and just having the local cycle shp do the 1000, or is it worth it to drive the
70 miles to the dealer? I just dont have time to take the day off and go all the way there
before LAUGHLIN! !
The 1000 mile maintenance cost was $199.29. $64.29 in parts, $120 in labor and $15.00 for "final adjustments and road test". They also washed the bike for me. I was able to stop in a few times and check on things. It was definitely much more than a simple oil change. They adjusted and checked just about everything. I'm fairly cheap, and I don't feel it was exorbitant by any means.
If anyone's interested in the Stage 1 Cost it was:
Mufflers (64903-99) $319 plus $25 labor
Air filter kit (29773-02B) $139 plus $50 labor
Download (33273-058/DT) $149.95 plus $32.50 labor.
By the way, all I dreamed about last night was the sound of those pipes and the snap of the throttle. I think I need professional help!
