I agree with the headwind, my '07 drops down to the mid thirties mpg in a brisk headwind from a norm of 40-42 mpg. If the winds you were heading into were like the ones we had in central Fl. which were blowing steady in the low 20mph range, out of the west, NW, gusting to the high 30mph, than this will definitely knock down your MPG by quite a bit
When facing that kind of headwind, I keep the bike in 5th even at highway cruising speeds.
My MPG's got a little better on day 2 when there was less headwind, but it was still in the 30's at best. It was another windy ride, but a little better than the day before. I guess I won't know until I can log some more long miles and I can test it out again. All in all, I did not spend a whole hell of a lot on gas in the scheme of things for an 800 + mile ride, but it is concerning to see MPG's go to hell in a handbasket - it makes you wonder if there is something wrong with the bike.
It sure was a fun ride right up until I had to get on the freeway in Dallas. Holy ****...
I would say you have a problem with the bike. With my bike fully loaded running in the 70-80mph range in 6th gear the lowest my mileage ever went was 42. I have a windshield, saddle bags, travel bag on the rear seat and another bag on the luggage rack, and I'm not a small guy (240 lbs.). I'm running a S.E.R.T. with a stage 1. Before the stage 1 my mileage was in the low 50's.
What model bike are you riding?
THIS is the reason Baker came out with the DD6spd. Direct Drive. 6th in these, is BACK to the 1:1 vs .89:1. They did it via the primary drive, vs the 6th gear inside the tranny.

Gump - I understand the difference between direct drive and overdrive but for some reason I thought 6th gear on my Bob was direct drive, that is 1:1 ratio.
As I type this I can't remember where I read it, hell maybe I just dreamed it up.
