From a consumer standpoint it would be great if they would just sell five different frames and let us build-to-order our own..... But from a business standpoint they currenty sell a complete bike and some folks go as far as to spend almost as much in (duplicate) parts.
I cant imagine them thinking its a good business decision to do it any other way, now that we already buy a whole bike and wind up with 3/4ths of one on the pegboard in the garage.
Thats exactly the way HD used to sell bikes. They had one big twin, and a Sportster with and without electric start. Not counting the Italian stuff of course.
Harley marketing has decided that multiple models leveraged from the same platforms is what works for their buyer. Although HD has taken some strong hits in the down economy, they are much more successful with their marketing than their competition.
I was at the Juneau Ave plant for a visit last week and saw one of the new Augusta bikes. Don't know which one, just something one of the execs bought. Scary little beast Maybe that's the future? Nah, sorry I even thought that. A very astute and informed person, (my dad who will never miss a meal) told me that HD was one of the best managed companies in the world and not to ever worry about it. I just wish I had a few thousand to spare when the HOG price was 7.99 a share. Close yesterday was 18.02 The MOCO ain't done yet. They survived a lot of chit and my bet is they will survive this.
I was saying why don't they offer a base model of each line.
Something along the lines of you buy/order a FXD then you check off the options you want? You can get the base bike or add mini apes, Low Rider dash, forwards and choice of tires and fenders??? Might actually make sense but it would take money out of the service departments pockets losing the after sales add ons.
