Default Is a 5 year old to young to ride?

Now that my wife is working 2nd shift I have to watch my 5 year old step dauther She likes to go the park on Fort mtn. which is a nice short ride up.I hate to waste a trip like that in a cage.I couldn't find any law for a minimum age but thats doesn't mean its a dumb ideal.

as long as she can reach the pegs and understands how to act on the bike (won't move much, wont try and get off at stop signs, knows to hold on at all times).. then good to go

Five is the youngest by law in Washington, my six year old just puts his feet on the bag guards.

I would be hesitant to do it a lot. I would only let them ride if their feet can reach the footpegs and if they are ATGATT. I could not imagine living with myself if I went down with a young kid on the back that was not wearing FULL gear. The thought of a young kids screams from road rash that could have been prevented with proper gear would be hard to live with. Sure, kids gear is expensive and they outgrow it fast but what would you be willing to pay to ease their pain in the event that the gear is ever needed?
Be safe and have fun, I'm sure your daughter will love it.

My 2 cents - way too young. You would be depending on a 5 year old to behave 100% as instructed. Having taken 2 through adulthood I don't think thats something I would want to bet their life on.

Sounds sort of harsh but not meant that way. I feel pretty stongly on the subject

well I can say this my 2.5 son and 3.5 daughter have both ridden up and down the street (first gear less than 10mph) and my older boy who is now 12 rode his own dirtbike at 3 and was on the back of my bike at 5 always outfitted properly but he wanted and enjoyed to ride so he listened knowing if he wanted to ride again that's what he had to do.

When my son was 4-5 I would ride him the 4 miles to see his grandmother. As I have aged, and I hoped gained some wisdom, I'm not sure I would do that now. My son would start to fall asleep even during the short 10 minute ride. It would concern me when I would feel his helmet hit me in the back as his head slumped forward from him staring to doze off. The point about the proper saftey clothing is a good one. Back when I was riding my son I was too poor to afford anything more then a cheap helmet for myself. My son only had a helmet too.

I wondered the same my 9 year old daughter wants to ride mine maybe just through town. I have a helmet that fits her but has not taken that step yet. I might soon, as she has been bugging me to do it.
