You never know if the dealer put major money into the bike before reselling, so what he got for trade in makes no difference.

I wish I could have done that, bought my "84" FXRT from Brighton H-D here in Michigan. With a bike that old the previous owner might have had some stories about some cool trips or thing he might have done with the bike, just some history.

happened to me, Traded a triumph in on my bike, next day had a phone call from the dealer, asking me if i would mind speaking to a fella that was interested in buying the trumpy, he wouldn't purchase it until he had more info about the bike. mods, and such. i told them i would contact him, which worked out real good for me. after he purchases it, i am going to sell him stuff i had left over.

Wanted to contact the PO of the bike I bought last year, the auto wholesaler who handled the deal (the owner rode, and they had several bikes there) wouldn't provide contact info and the the PO declined to call me. I know why, too, the bike had an issue (needed a re-jet). I sold a sailboat to a guy, and to make the sale, I told him he could call me, and he did, a few times, once from the slip, he couldn't get the diesel to shutdown.

My theory is that once a prior owner got rid of his old bike, why would he really want to tell the truth about all the problems he had with the bike??

Would the dealer get pissed if the old owner told the truth about why he dumped a junker on the dealer?

If you can't trust your dealer or your own judgement then buy a new one or keep looking.

My bike was a repo, so no I did not call him. I did not know if he was pissed, or still had an extra key. I just called all over the area to find out who had done on the first service for information.

I would, I think most people would be glad to let you know about their bike.
