Default Bullet Headlamp Kit. Removing retaining ring?

Bulb went out on my Tejas. It has the Harley Davidson Bullet Headlamp assembly (Catalog Number 68593-06) for a Softtail. Problem is I cannot get the retaining ring out to access the bulb. It has a set screw under the assembly and even with it completely removed, the ring will not come out. I can spin it around the assembly, but removing it is another story. Any hints, tips or ideas?

If it is like mine you have to spin it off.

Once you remove the set screw, spin the retaining ring counter clockwise. It has threads and will basically screw off.

Ended up taking it to the Harley Dealer. They had the bike for two days and could not get it off. They went so far as to request breaking the glass. Next day they called and said they finally got it off. Labor $150.

Have a 2007 Dyna. Bought this unit in December 2008 and paid $329. for it. I also needed a new bulb in it at the end of 2011. The Dealer couldn't get the inner ring off either. They literally destroyed the headlamp to the point where they ended up giving me a brand new one. Just yesterday, removed the inner ring and saw rust starting and it had lots of bugs and sand in the threads. Wiped it all off and put some anti seize on the threads. Will need to remember to service this new headlamp like this this every year as I'm not going to shell out $300+ bucks when my bulb goes out. I'm happy my dealer picked up the tab for the new lamp and labor to install. Next time I wont be as lucky I'm sure.
Poor design if you ask me.
