A Positive Article about Bikers!

Chicago Sun Times
Ah, bikers, they're just 'hopeless romantics'
May 11, 2009
Want a soft-hearted guy? Date a biker.
Male motorcyclists, despite their tough-guy reputations, are sensitive souls, prone to tearing up at big moments and getting involved in charities.
That's according to a quirky survey done by Progressive Insurance Co.
The survey interviewed 1,100 male bikers and non-bikers, including 240 in the Chicago area.
Male bikers around the country were more likely than non-riders to describe themselves as "hopeless romantics" and to say that "getting their heart broken" was their biggest cause for tears. Bikers also are more likely than non-riders to get involved in a charity or cause, particularly those involving children.
When their children are born, bikers are more likely to be moved to tears compared to non-bikers (15 percent to 13 percent). Chicago bikers were twice as likely to choke up in the delivery room -- 20 percent of bikers as opposed to 10 percent of non-bikers.
Chicago riders also were four times more likely than those who don't ride to coach a local sports team (17 percent vs. 4 percent).
Fitting the stereotype, motorcyclists are nearly three times more likely than non-riders to have a tattoo (32 percent vs. 12 percent).
But biker tattoos are more likely to be sentimental -- bikers were nearly twice as likely as non-riders to have a tattoo of their significant other's name (18 percent compared to 10 percent), and more likely to go for "soft" tattoos such as hearts and flowers -- with some admitting to unicorns and the Cookie Monster.
Rick Stern, motorcycle product manager for Progressive Insurance and a biker himself, says he can't explain the results, but he knows bikers are a very diverse group that can't be categorized.
"It dispels a lot of the myths out there about the stereotypical motorcyclists -- the burly, brawny guy who just lives a hard life and lives to bike," said Stern.
"There are a lot of professional people who are motorcycle riders," said Stern. "You may be surprised to see who's under the helmet."
