windshield n fairings happen when you get too old, similar to a cane they help keep old timers mobile schumacher. my uncles used to be badass bikers an now they ride these huge golfcarts covered in chick repellent ( fairings, hard bags). they explain its easier on em and the women in their age group appreciate em for the same reason. i'll NEVER surrender !! i'll work out even harder when i get old an chop my bike into a even meaner bike from hell! and you'll never catch me grampin out with time, only mad max'n out!!!!
I swore I would never have one. Then I saw an add on craigslist for 20 bucks, that was the best 20 I ever spent its on more than off. Its on my dyna and you dont have to like it but it works for me..
OP, why do you even bother asking what others think? Build your bike they way you want to build it, dont build it the way someone else thinks it should look. If you want to try a windshield, go for it, if you like it fine if not take it off. Its your ride man, build it like you want and if others dont like the result they can take a hike.
So what's a long day of riding for you? If you can do 6 or 7 hundred miles miles or more without a shield my hat is off to you. If not, you're just cruising locally. I don't have a shield on my '49 for the same reason, it's just for profiling and looking good.
DK, first of all, I don't have to qualify myself to anyone...you might call 6 or 700 miles distance and someone else will trump you with 1,000 doing an Ironbutt, and call your 6 to 700 miles just "cruising locally"...I could make a statement that anyone can wimp out and do 6 to 700 miles behind a shield and fairings, but try it without all that stuff and see how far you get...that stuff's all just egotistical one upmanship that I have no interest in...I'm not in a competition...I ride for the love of it since '67, and let others do as they please...
My Train isn't for profiling even tho everyone tells me it looks good...an average day running around the countryside in the tri state area here just for fun is 100-200 miles...I've done 500 or so any number of times over the years, with this bike and others, right alongside my friends on the cruisers with the shields and fairings, and an extra 100 or 2 if necessary, wouldn't worry me if the others wanted to push it...I just personally don't need or want a shield, but don't knock those who do...hell, I know a woman who's ridden her hardtail with no shield to Myrtle and Daytona from Ohio lots of times...she puts most guys I know to shame...as said before, each to their own...

This seems to have become more of a p!s$in contest than anything else. To each his own.
Where I draw the line is when somebody says a statement like "I hate how crash bars look" then later they post how they dropped their scoot, tore up their pants and got road rash. I like the creature comfort stuff like crash bars, bags, and windshield but everybody can decide for themselves just don't make a big thing about it and then have ta crawfish when you realize you might have been mistaken.

Cute. Lighten up Francis, if you want to think of 500 miles as a long day I don't have a problem with that. It probably is for those of you in the younger generation.
Anytime you want to run an "Iron Butt" or more accurately a "Saddlesore" or "Bunburner" of 1000-1500 miles let me know. You go without a shield and I'll sit behind mine and if you're still in my rearview at the end of the day I'll buy dinner and pay for your motel.

Tell ya what...I'll lighten up, you can stop being serious as a heart attack about something we do for fun, and we both can keep our boots dry...and "younger generation"? I'll be 60 in a few months, if you're THAT much older than me, I'll buy YOU dinner and a bottle of Geritol! :- )
