I have an HD quick detachable windshield on my 99 Softail Custom, and it is about 2" above my line of sight. It looks to me like I could cut out the headlight area and move the windshield's lower clamps down below the lower triple tree which would lower it without cutting the top down. Only thing is I do not know what it would do to handling and wind deflection. Any body ever try this?
No, but your windshield should be just under eye level if you are sitting up straight. We have a specialties plastic group that is local here that works wonders making and trimming windshields.
If you have a jigsaw it's easy to cut your own. Took just 3/4 inch off mine and it made a big difference in riding comfort. I dare say it's impossible for anyone but a glass expert to tell it's not a factory cut.
Plenty of videos and tutorials online. I have a link in my files to what I think is one of the best if you decide to go that route.

I was always told the shield should be between your nose and your upper lip. that way you look over. I took mine to a glass shop that cut and polished the edges for $25. I wouldn't even try it myself for that!
Thanks Guys; I will probably just cut the top down since no one has done the bottom up mod. Thought by lowering the whole thing I might get rid of some of the buffeting. And then again it could make it worse. Hate to screw up a good windshield. Cutting the top down should be a piece of cake as I have both a jig saw, and a band saw. Either should do the job. I have done mods on my Sportster windshield without problems.

+1. Took mine to a local glass shop and the guy did a great job, very professional, and only asked me to give him $20 for the work!
After thinking about for some time I decided to do it myself.
I followed the instructions from the YouTube tutorial and took off 2" it came out just fine.
And although it did not git rid of all the buffeting it did decrease it substantially. Plus with the quick detach you still have a little bit of adjustment up and down on the forks.
