$600 - is it worth it?
My uncle's wife had an 82 sportster (it has 25th anniv badging all over it) sitting in her garage since 1991, she moved out of the house and wanted to get rid of the bike. I was told they would let me have it for $600, I gave them a $100 deposit on it since I was leaving for my honnymoon the next day.
We just got back and I started looking over the bike, it turns out whoever was working on it before pulled the transmission out, took it apart to replace 2nd gear, I was told. Well, I only have parts of the tranny now and NONE of the bolts or anything that holds the right or left side covers on. I have the starter, primary drive chain, sproket and the clutch pack, random tranny parts.. but nothing else.
I've seen complete and rebuilt trannys going on ebay for anywhere from $200 to $500..
I ordered a parts book and service manual for the bike while I was on my honnymoon and had them on my porch when I got home, so I know what parts, bolts, washers and missing things I need but wanted to know if you guys thought it would be worth it to put time and money into the thing, it would probably a slow build over a few months.. But I've not been around harleys that much just need some advice.
Regards,
Dusty.

Correction, They just brought me a box with the rest of the parts.. I'm still not sure that all the nuts and bolts and things are there, but it looks like its mostly complete..
I found a chipped gear, looking thru the parts book I think its either the mainshaft second gear or the counter shaft third gear. They look similar in the illustration.
