I'm a bit confused because my "local" HD dealer told me it cost $250 a year to insure a sporty.....and I think that's very low, maybe I didn't quiet understand what he said tho.
I live in D.C. but there is no HD dealer in that city but I have family in V.A. and so I was thinking that I could register my bike in V.A. you know.....
Apparently it also changes a lot of things if you use your bike to go to work or only for pleasure...I plan on using the bike for everything!
So my question is: if you have a Sporty, how much does it cost a year or a month and how good are you covered with that?
first off the local dealer sells motorcycles, not insurance. for a real quote, go to an insurance agent. i went with progressive, through hd insurance. it was cheaper than going straight through progressive.
the price sounds about right though. i had 2 sporties insured and i was paying 320.00 per year. remember, the sporty is less than 10 grand so insurance is gonna be way less than it would be on a touring bike that has a larger engine (even though it is slower ), and a lot more expensive.
as far as how good the coverage was? i had made 2 claims (neither one was a 'moving accident') and was taken care of quickly and fairly.
i would double check on registering your bike in va though. i don't know about dc, but va has that 'property tax' thing going on. its like paying sales tax on your vehicle every year you own it. don't know if dc does that.
It would all depend on who you are, where you are, how old you are, how old the bike is etc.,etc., etc. ---- A LOT of different factors would be in play.
Check and make sure that covers theft. Once you add that to an insurance policy it will jump up in price very quickly. I have had a vehicle stolen. I carry FULL coverage, including loss by theft. I haven't had a ticket in 12 years, and never had an accident, my insurance for my Truck and my Fatboy runs about 2 grand a year.
FYI, full coverage typically doesn't include loss by theft.
Why not just call around to some insurance places and get some quotes? Nobody here is going to be able to answer your question. Factors in price include age, gender, traffic record, the threft rating for that model for the area you live in, etc.
I know there are a lot of factors that make the price vary. For example, I made a quote with Geico for a Sportster 883, they ask $1000 a year. So when I was talking to the saler well he explained that HD has special deals and I went on the website and found the link for Progressive. The problem is that Progressive does not insure HD in D.C. lol.....
But some of you confirmed the price of 250-300 a year which is not so bad.
For those that pay this price do you know if you are covered for theft?
I thought it would be better to take an insurance via HD because they claim to have special insurances for bikers :-)
