How do you explain to your significant others, wives, husbands, etc, why you would ride your bike for over 8 hours just cruising around, but you wouldn't do the same in your car? Mine does not understand at all and probably never will. It's a conflict every time I want to ride my bike. Even on short trips an hour or two long. The jealousy is getting bad. And there isn't any reason for it. I balance the time between the two well.
All I can say is "it's just different on a bike". So then they say - well it's just a toy then. I can't win...Anyone else have this problem?
I don't really have that problem with my wife but I have explained that a ride is what helps me reset my mind from the daily stresses of life. I'm not exactly sure why it does but I think it has something to the fact that I concentrate on the road and the ride, forgetting about the other stuff for a while.
In a car I daydream a bit and am much less focused. In fact, sometimes a car ride can do the opposite of what a bike ride does for me. I'll return from a ride in the car more tense and stressed than when I left.
Either way wife will sometimes suggests I take a bike ride to clear my head when she knows things are bothering me a great deal.
Never had that problem fortunately. But I would recommend getting your significant other involved. Invite him/her to go with you and after a couple of decent rides/trips they will start to understand why we do it. And once that has happened it makes it easier in the long run.
"for those of us who understand,no explanation is needed...for those of you who don't understand,no explanation is possible"...take her with you if she will go...
My problem is just the opposite. I'm finding it getting harder to go out riding with my buds cuz she wants to go. She even wants to go when I don't. Someday I'm gonna have to get her riding her own.

I guess I am fourtunate. My wife understands that for me riding is much more than a hobby, It's a way of life. She also rides her own so she understands better than some would.
