dump the truck... dump the girlfriend.... keep the bike. at the very least get an apartment and enjoy your young adult life!!!!! learn to stand before you start to walk (apartment living).... learn to walk before you run (homeownership). most people you will ever talk to started out in an apartment of some type.... and especially if the picture involves such a young couple... odds are stacked against you that it will last and the ast thing you want at that point is her taking half when the honeymoon is over. not to mention that there's a real good chance that she'll have 1 in the oven within the first year or so... it just happens... it's your choice but, listen to the advice you're getting because chances are it will keep you from making a mistake that could have a serious impact on your life.
Dump the bike and truck get you finances in order. You are living home. You might be young, but you have been with this girl 5 years and seem mature enough just to pose the question of what to do. Bikes and trucks are bought and sold all the time, but if you dump the girl you want to start a life with for toys...fun toys, but toys that's just crazy. After you get your own home, get another better bike. At the end of the day another better women may never come along. Just my opinion. Although I agree that this is not the place to come for relationship issues, I find it hard to believe that a relationship with a motorcycle should trump any established relationship with a living breathing person. Geez FXDIinMD no offense but. this guy is commited and thinking of 2 people, not just himself
I have to agree with others. With insurance costs, you are at $1,000 to $1,200 per month on your two vehicles at 21 and talking about trying to buy a home and living paycheck to paycheck. It is about priorities. There is plenty of time to drive the best, etc., but getting into your own house (notice I said your own house, not one with a girlfriend) is a good priority to have. Get your finances in order, get cheaper vehicles (cheaper bikes are available, too), start saving for your down payment and then get into a starter home that you can AFFORD.
Do NOT, under any circumstances, buy a house with a girlfriend. I am watching my dumbass brother-in-law trying to extricate himself from this exact situation now after he found out that his girlfriend of many years was cheating on him. Buy your house for yourself and she can live with you if you want, but do it yourself. Keep yourself independent financially until you make it legal (and that should not happen at 21).
The Marines is a damn good idea, too, BTW. Semper Fi!
sell the car, sell the bike. Never never buy a car or bike on credit. Buy a good reliable beater, and put the money you would be paying the bank into a savings account (pay yourself the interest, not the bank) Only buy when you can afford to pay cash. If you were not making payments you would be banking how much every month? think how fast that adds up. Banks are getting rich off your money, they love consumer credit.
don't buy the house just yet. Are you ready to get married? do that first, live together for a year as cheaply as possible, again saving as much as you can towards your down payment. It's a buyers market for houses right now, that's not gonna change significantly in the next year.
Just my honest opinion but for me 21 was too young to get married , I wanted to live a little before I settled down , problem is it took about 20 more years for that to happen. Best thing for a young man to do is get an education so you can make some real money and in the mean time live a little . when the wife and kids come time for toys may not be there unless you have a stable and strong income that allows you to provide for your family and your self. remember that even though you have a family you have to be who you are too. Biggest thing is you gotta set your feet in the right direction no matter what you choose.Good Luck to you.
"All generalizations are useless, including this one."
Listen to all the advice and then listen to that little voice deep inside. I check the bike ads daily to keep tabs on the market. Some of the best bikes ever made sell for under $5k. For some folks that may represent too much for a "toy or luxury." For others, that represents economical transportation on a machine that would make Enzo smile. Life is full of choices.
I say keep the bike, move out anyways, things have a way of working themselves out. But you just have to do it. Personally I would sell the truck. Now if you have kids then you need a way to haul them around. My wife and I live paycheck to paycheck and it sucks, We own a car and my bike, and have 3 children and it seems to work out fine, although you have to ride in the rain and the cold weather alot... but hey thats all right with me as long as I can still do it.
