Default Motorcycle Vacations

When you guys go on Motorcycle trips for a week or so, How far do you drive daily and do you go the highway or the secondary roads?

We usually ride between 350 and 500 miles a day depending on what there is to see. We have rode as little as 100 miles if there are a lot of attractions that take time. We seem to do more based on time rather than miles unless we are just trying to get somewhere. 12 to 13 hours a day is pretty normal and we have done as much as 16.

Most of our traveling is done on secondary roads for the most part. Again, this depends on whether the trip is about the ride or the destination. If we need to get there, then the Interstate or freeways are used. If we are just touring for the sights, then it's backroads as much as possible.

Regards,

Bill

It also depends on what you are riding & where. In the desert I do less miles, definetly wind cuts down on the miles you will ride. I did 420 mile in a wind storm, and I was DONE. I have done 5-600 miles in a day and still felt good. So it depends.

We usually shoot for 200 - 300 miles a day. We seldom ride the interstates and try to use roads that go through small towns. That's where you find some pretty cool stuff. But like Bill says, if we are trying to make tracks to get home, we'll take the freeways and do longer days.

2 hrs - stop get gas, 2 hrs - stop get gas -eat lunch, 2 hrs - stop get gas , 2 hrs - stop get gas - stop for the night. So about 600 miles per day at 75mph. We ride mostly secondary roads but in a hurry we will jump on the interstate to make time. Good biker bars are also tough to ride by without stopping for the night!!

I like to be on the road by 5:00 am in the summer, do a couple of hours, stop and eat breakfast, and in any case have my main riding done by 1:00 or 2:00 pm to beat the heat. I like to motel it and usually you have no problem finding a room when you are getting off the road in the early afternoon. This gives you 5 or 6 hours of riding, which might add up to as much as 500 miles on the interstate, which I avoid like the plague unless I have to "Git Somewheres" fast. If it isn't too hot, you can easily extend the ride as long as you want.

I usually try to plan my trips so I am somewhere I want to be every 300-350 miles or so.

Anyone do the L.A. to Vegas run? Was considering it but I rarely see bikes on the 15.
Is there an alternate route or do you go through Laughlin? It's about 300 miles or so for me.

Sorry don't mean to highjack the thread....moving to a new one...

A lot depends on what your riding. Eight hours on a ________ might be a killer(don't want to mention any particular bike and start a fight LOL), ten eight hours on a Classic behind that fairing might be a piece of cake for you. We usually try and do about 8 to 9 hours on our Ultra and get off the road before 6 PM so we can find a motel. A lot of times you can measure out the miles you plan on and book ahead. Like the others have said, secondary roads are more enjoyable. Just depends on how far you want to travel in a day. Just get out and go!
