Down here in Florida it's a little different.
After someone gives you a downlow wave you should immediately give a downlow peace sign, and then curl your index finger up.
If someone does a normal wave, you should clench your fist in front of your stomach and move it up and down rapidly six times.

One of the things our instructor told the class after we passed the Basic Rider Course was that we could now start perfecting our waves.

If they wave high shoot them one of the signs on the upper row. If they wave low you must shoot them a sign on the lower row. Please see link below for the appropriate biker sign diagram:

passed on ole guy today, and I'am 59, so that will tell ya He's really old..
Anyway i gave him the low wave and when he passed he had such a grip on the bars I don't think U could pry them off..He cocked his head sideways and gave me a sideways nod with what looked like a very painful looking grin with half of his mouth. At first I thought he was having a stroke. Told the wife I was almost sorry I waved to him..
